Martina Dearstyne says her son， Harrison， uses music as a way to connect with people. Hes great at it， too —“Hes a bit of a savant，”said Dearstyne， of Massapequa Park.“Hes got perfect pitch（音高）. He touched all the keys on a piano at 8 years old， and started playing parts of classical music he heard growing up.”

Aristotle thought the face was a window onto a persons mind. Nowadays， facial expressions are still thought to be a universally valid（有效的）way to judge other peoples feelings， irrespective of age， sex and culture. A raised eyebrow suggests confusion. A smile represents happiness. A frown（皱眉）indicates sadness.

Or do they？An analysis of hundreds of research papers that examined the relationship between facial expressions and underlying emotions has uncovered a surprising conclusion： there is no good scientific evidence to suggest that there are such things as recognizable facial expressions for basic emotions which are universal across cultures. A person is not smiling， the researchers found， does not mean that person is unhappy.

Lisa Feldman Barrett， one of the authors of the study， told the AAAS meeting in Seattle，“We surprised ourselves”. As a psychologist at Northeastern University in Boston， Massachusetts， Dr. Feldman Barrett， along with her partners， found that， on average， adults in urban cultures frowned when they were angry 30% of the time， which meant that some 70% of the time they did not frown when angry. Instead， they did something else with their faces. People also frowned when they were not angry. They frowned for lots of reasons.

The researchers concluded that a frown is not the only way people express anger. The ambiguous nature of facial expressions was not restricted to anger， but seemed valid for all six of the emotional categories that they examined： anger， dislike， fear， happiness， sadness and surprise.

All this raises questions about the efforts of information-technology companies to develop artificial-intelligence algorithms（演算法）which can recognize facial expressions and work out a persons underlying emotional state. Microsoft， for example， claims its“Emotion API”is able to detect what people are feeling by examining video footage of them. Another of the studys authors， however， had their doubts. Aleix Martinez， a computer engineer at Ohio State University， said that companies attempting to take emotions from images of faces have failed to understand the importance of context.

As a key component of cement（水泥）， and glass， sand is essential to every aspect of our lives. It is in our phones， our schools， our hospitals， and our roads. In addition， the amount of sand we use daily is second only to water. Globally， humans consume up to 50 billion metric tons of sand every year， amounting to 18 kilograms per person per day， concludes a United Nations report.

Demand for sand is rising. Desert sand， however， is too smooth to use for building materials， so most sand is sourced from quarries（采石场）. Increasingly， it also comes from coastal beaches， rivers and oceans， causing harm to waters， fisheries and protected areas. And“growth in the extraction（开采）and use of these minerals is putting pressure on the resource and will likely lead to an‘sad situation of common places of sandunless a more responsible occupation of these resources is promoted，”says Aurora Torres， an ecologist  at the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research in Leipzig.

To solve the problems， one recommendation is to decrease unnecessary building projects. When building new structures is necessary， recycling old materials is a good option， particularly for developed countries. Germany， for instance， recycles 87% of its waste materials. When new sand is needed， it should come from fixed quarries， if possible， and not lakes and oceans. And to ensure that users know their sand is coming from less damaging sources， governments and businesses should create supply chains and regulatory structures that trace sand from its source to the final buyer.

Such recommendations are a good start， Torres says. But？the issue is still“understudied”and“rarely”comes up in scientific circles， she says.“Hopefully this report will contribute to smoothing the path for more dialogue， interaction， and cooperation between countries connected by sand. It is time to treat sand like a resource， just equal with clean air， water， and other natural resources that nations seek to manage for the future.”
