1 2020 began as a strange year. We got the order to shelter at home, along with everyone else in China. Once the situation in China got better in the spring and Suzhou began to open up slowly, we tried to take advantage of all the great things we could do and see locally. Each part of the city has its own special charm.
2 In Gusu, we visited some of Suzhous famous gardens and took advantage of seeing some art. We also went to Ke Yuan and the Canglang Pavilion during Suzhou Design Week to see how modern art can coexist with some of the oldest gardens in Suzhou. While exploring the historic part of the town, we visited many of the great cafes that line the old alleys.
3 In Xiangcheng, we visited the Suzhou Museum of Imperial Kiln Brick. Learning about this historic place, which ties Suzhou to so many of the iconic buildings in Beijing like the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven, helped us understand Suzhous unique place in Chinese history.
4 In Wujiang, during the National Day holiday, we visited a local brewery (啤酒廠). We enjoyed their excellent food and had a wonderful time visiting some workshops of handmade craft beers. You can find their product at some downtown pubs.
5 One of our favorite experiences happened on the outskirts of the city, in Dongshan of Wuzhong. During the peak of the season, we went to pick the famous Suzhou Biluochun Tea. It was amazing to experience the hard work that the local people do to find and deliver us this wonderful drink! We even got to roast some of the tea ourselves and now we get to enjoy the great memory with each cup.
6 All these experiences allowed us to appreciate Suzhou for the unique and beautiful places that it has. In the future, we will continue to explore new adopted home cities, finding new and interesting things to do. We hope the new year means a healthy restart for China and the rest of the world, and we are happy to be in Suzhou.
