連词although和though意为“尽管;虽然”,都可以引导让步状语从句。although与though一般情况下可以通用,但though多用于口语,although较为正式。例如:
Although / Though I know it’s difficult, I still want to have a try. 尽管知道很难,但我还是要试一试。
I really enjoyed your speech although / though I didn’t quite understand some parts of it.
我很喜欢你的演讲,虽然有些地方我不太明白。
在使用时,我们还应该注意以下几点:
1. 当although或though引导的从句放在句首时,主从句要用逗号隔开。例如:
Although / Though the kitchen is small, it is well designed. 厨房虽然小,可是设计得很好。
2. although和though都不能与but连用,但可以和still或yet连用。例如:
译:虽然我们尽了最大努力,但还是输了比赛。
正:We still lost the game although / though we tried our best.
正:Although / Though we tried our best, we still lost the game.
误:Although / Though we tried our best, but we still lost the game.
3. 在下列情况下,只能用though:
⑴ though能和as组合构成词组as though(好像),但although不能。例如:
You look as though you know each other. 看起来你们好像彼此认识。
⑵ though能和even组合构成词组even though(即使;虽然),表示强调,但although不能。例如:
Even though I didn’t know anybody at the party, I had a good time.
虽然参加晚会的人我一个也不认识,但我还是玩得很愉快。
She won’t leave the TV set, even though her supper’s on the table.
即使晚餐已摆在桌子上了,她也不愿离开电视机。
(3)though还可用作副词,常放在句末或句子中间,用逗号分隔,意为“但是,不过,然而”,而although没有这种用法。例如:
I don’t think he is a bad chap, though. 但是,我不认为他是个坏家伙。
The grapes, though, may be sour. 不过,这些葡萄可能还是酸的。
