The measure (衡量) of a mans real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

These words are from Thomas Macaulay, a famous English historian. Ill remember them all my life.

Some thirty years ago, I was studying in a public school in New York. One day, Mrs. Manette Oneill gave an arithmetic test to our class. When the papers were marked, she discovered that twelve boys had made exactly the same mistakes throughout the test.

There is nothing really new about cheating in exams. Perhaps that was why Mrs. Oneill didnt even say a word about it. She only asked the twelve boys to remain after class. I was one of the twelve.

Mrs. Oneill asked no questions, and she didnt scold (责备) us either. Instead, she wrote on the blackboard the above words by Thomas Macaulay. She then ordered us to copy these words into our exercise books one hundred times.

I dont know about the other eleven boys. Speaking for myself I can say: It was the most important single lesson of my life. Thirty years after being introduced to Macaulays words, they still seem to me the best yardstick (準绳), because they give us a way to measure ourselves rather than others.

In our life, few of us are asked to make great decisions about nations going to war or armies going to battle. But all of us are called on daily to make a great many personal decisions. Should the wallet, found in the street, be put into a pocket or turned over to the policeman? Should the extra change received at the store be forgotten or returned? Nobody will know except you. But you have to live with yourself, and it is always better to live with someone you respect.

(    )6. From the passage, we know that Thomas Macaulays words means ______.

A. students shouldnt cheat in tests

B. people can do anything if others cant find out

C. people should be honest in anything they do

(    )7. Why will the writer remember Mrs. Oneills words?

A. He can remember them very clearly by coping them one hundred times.

B. Mrs. Oneill is a very popular person.

C. The words mean much to him.

(    )8. What probably happened when the boys had the arithmetic test?

A. They broke the windows.

B. They copied from each other.

C. They were late for the test.

(    )9. What does the writer think of the way his teacher deal with the cheating?

A. Its helpful.        B. Its stupid.      C. Its strange.

(    )10. According to the writer, which of the following is TRUE?

A. We should learn to make great decisions.

B. We can put the wallet into our pocket if we find it in the street.

C. We are supposed to do right things even if others will never know.
