上一期我们讨论了社会主义核心价值观(the core values of Chinese socialism)中社会层面的前两个概念——自由(freedom)和平等(equality),这一期我们来看看第三个词——公正(justice)。

一、公正的概念

公正在英文中译为justice /΄dʒʌstIs/ ,词根为just-法律,公正 + -ice名词词尾,牛津词典对justice一词有五种解释:

1. the fair treatment of people 公平;公正

例句:They are demanding equal rights and justice.

他们要求平等的权利和公正的待遇。

2. the quality of being fair or reasonable 公道;合理;公平合理

例句:Who can deny the justice of their cause?

谁能否认他们的追求是合理的呢?

3. the legal system used to punish people who have committed crimes 司法制度;法律制裁;审判

the criminal justice system 刑法体系

例句:They were accused of attempting to pervert the course of justice .

他们因企图妨碍司法公正而被控。

4. a judge in a court 法官

Chief Justice 首席法官;大法官;审判长

5. used before the name of a judge in a court of appeal (称谓)上诉庭法官

Mr. Justice Davies 高等法院法官戴维斯先生

Idioms (习语):

1. bring sb to justice(将某人)绳之以法,缉拿归案

例句:There are a great number of drug traffickers in this place, and we are determined to bring them to justice.

这一带有很多毒贩,我们一定要把他们绳之以法。

2. do justice to sb/sth; do sb/sth justice 公平对待某人(或某事);给以公正的评价;恰当处理某人(或某事)

例句:That photo doesn't do you justice.

那张照片不如你本人好看。

例句:You cannot do justice to such a complex situation in just a few pages.

你不可能仅仅几页就将这么复杂的形势恰如其分地描述出来。

3. do oneself justice 充分发挥自己的能力

例句:She didn't do herself justice in the exam.

反义词 injustice / In΄dʒʌstIs /

意为“the fact of a situation being unfair and of people not being treated equally; an unfair act or an example of unfair treatment” 指不公正,不公平(的对待或行为)。

例句:The report exposes the injustices of the system.

报告揭露了这个制度的种种不公正。

Let us arm against injustice.

让我们抵制不公正的行为。

Idioms (习语) :

do yourself/sb. an injustice 待……不公正;冤枉

Just 有两个意思。

1. that most people consider to be morally fair and reasonable 公正的;正义的;正当的;合理的

a just decision/law/society 公正的决定 / 法律 / 社会

2. appropriate in a particular situation 合适的;恰当的

a just reward/punishment 应有的报偿 / 惩罚

例句:I think she got her just deserts.

我认为她罪有应得。
