I returned home the other night, tired. My husband asked me how my evening was. “Great,” I told him. I had spent 90 minutes in a gym with 10 ping-pong tables and all kinds of players, all playing a little ball over the net. By 9 pm, I was excited, tired, satisfied. I had beaten two young men half my age and lost battles against other competitors. To an observer, the night was common. To me, it was a lucky thing that I hadnt expected.
I had taken up ping-pong during college, and in my 30s took more advanced lessons. However, a serious accident hurt my leg, which made me unable to take exercise. Months later, I tried to play ping-pong but my leg pained for a week. I put the game out of my mind.
When I was 53, one day my bad leg was working a little bit better. Could ping-pong be possible for me, now—in my condition, at my age? I tried to play ping-pong again.
Ping-pong is a sport which requires endurance (耐力). Players need quick foot work and upper body movements to return balls, requiring faster response time than tennis.
Playing ping-pong offers benefits for the brain. A study of 164 women aged 60 and older showed that ping-pong improved cognitive (認知) function more than dancing, walking or gymnastics. “The great thing about our sport is that it can be played by anyone,” said Jimmy Butler, a four-time national USA Table Tennis Association winner. “I see 90-year-olds and 10-year-olds.”
Years passed and my endurance improved. People started to praise my shots. I won a game. Then I won again. These days, I feel wonderful. I believe this sport is the fountain (源泉) of youth.
24. What can we know about the writer from the first paragraph?
A. She was satisfied with herself that evening. B. She felt disappointed when losing battles.
C. She lost games against two young men. D. She was the best player in the gym.
25. What sport can improve cognitive function more effectively according to the text?
A. Dancing. B. Walking. C. Ping-pong. D. Gymnastics.
26. What is the advantage about ping-pong sport according to Jimmy Butler?
A. It is good for the brain. B. It can be played by anyone.
C. It improves peoples endurance. D. It makes people physically strong.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. My Battle with My Illness B. A Life-changing Accident
C. My Wonderful Evening Exercise D. Ping-pong: the Fountain of Youth
C
How did the sea horse get its name? Its not hard to guess. The top half of this fish looks like a small horse. But looking at the sea horses tail, you might think “sea monkey” is a better name. Then theres the sea horses pouch (口袋). “Sea kangaroo” might also be a good name for this fish.
Sea horses live in warm ocean waters all over the world. They keep safe from other fish by hiding in plants and grasses that grow under the sea. They can also change colors to match their surroundings. A sea horse remains in one place for hours at a time by winding its tail around a plant. It feeds on live food, such as small shrimps. For a fish that doesnt move around much, the sea horse eats a lot—in just one day, a sea horse can eat 3,000 shrimps!
A sea horse keeps the same mate for its whole life, and its the male sea horse that gives birth to baby sea horses. How does this happen? Baby sea horses start out as eggs, which come from the females body. The male carries the eggs in its pouch for about three weeks until they hatch (孵化). Soon after the babies are born, the female gives her mate a new set of eggs.
Sadly, the number of sea horses is becoming smaller. Why is this happening? Some places where sea horses once lived have been filled in to make new land. Also, many sea horses are caught and sold as aquarium (水族館) fish. This really is not a good idea because most sea horses dont live long in aquarium. The best place for a sea horse is the ocean.
28. The sea horse got its name because of its ___ .
A. pouch B. head C. skin D. tail
29. What can we learn about sea horses from Paragraph 2?
A. They like to move around. B. They feed on small sea animals.
C. They live in cold ocean waters. D. They change colors with the temperature.
30. What does a female sea horse do with her eggs?
A. She carries them around. B. She hides them in sea grasses.
C. She puts them in the males pouch. D. She hatches them.
31. Why is the number of the sea horses becoming smaller?
A. They grow at a very low speed. B. Their food is becoming less and less.
C. They are killed by people for food. D. Their homes are being destroyed.

Englands highest main-line railway station is in serious trouble, deserted and unmanned since it was officially closed in 1970. Dent, located high in the hills of Yorkshire, wakes up on six summer weekends each year, when a special train unloads walkers, sightseers and people who simply want to catch a train from the highest station to its platforms.
But even this limited being may soon be brought to an end. Dent station located on the Settle to Carlisle railway line, is said to be surrounded by the most beautiful scenery in the country. But no amount of scenic beauty can save the line because of the British Rails money problems.
It is now an open secret that British Rail sees no future for this railway line. Most of its trains disappeared some time ago. Bridges, built a century ago, are falling down. It is not alone. Half a dozen railway routes in the North of England are facing a similar threat. The problem is an old system and an almost total lack of cash to repair it. Bridges and tunnels are showing their ages, the wooden supports for the tracks are rotting (腐烂) and engines and coaches (车厢) are getting old.
On main lines between large cities, the problem is not too bad. There lines still make a profit and cash can be found to keep them in good condition. But on the country branch line, the situation is different. As track wears out, it is not replaced. Instead speed limits are introduced, making the journey longer than necessary and discouraging travelers.
If a bridge is dangerous, there is often only one thing for British Rail to do: go out and find money from other places. This is exactly what it did a few months ago when a bridge at Bridlington station was threatening to fall down. Repairs were calculated at 200,000 pounds just for one bridge, so British Rail was pleased, and rather surprised when two local councils (理事會) offered half that amount of money.
32. What can we learn about the railway route which passes through Dent?
A. It is the most historic. B. It carries the greatest number of tourists.
C. It is the most expensive route for tourists. D. It passes through the most attractive countryside.
33. The most urgent problem for many British country railway lines is to ___ .
A. rebuild bridges B. repair engines C. renew coaches D. replace stations
34. Who would be most affected by the difficulties facing the British Rail?
A. Traders. B. Tourists. C. Farmers. D. Producers.
35. How should British Rail improve the financial situation of the country railway lines?
A. By increasing train fares. B. By bringing in speed limits.
C. By reducing repairing costs. D. By asking local councils for help.

Make good use of your time in class. Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly. When you get home, go over your notes, review the important points which will be discussed the next day, read that material. If you do these regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and youll remember it longer.

In order to get some exercises and enjoy the scenery more fully, we walk up instead of taking the bus. The higher we climbed, more tired we felt. And no one gave up. At last we all reached on the top, where we enjoyed our lunch and took many photos. At 4 pm, they returned home. Though I am still tiring, I feel happily. Above all, I have realized that we can succeed as long as we keep going.
