“格局”：释与译

内容摘要：一段时期以来，“格局”一词在时政话语里频频出现。本文以“格局”的语用为视角，辅以近期官方媒体关于“格局”的翻译案例，探讨对外传播中如何针对其不同语用意义进行翻译处理。

“格局”，按照《新华词典》解释，本指“结构和格式”。1从词源学的角度讲，无论是“格”，还是“局”，都有其严格的科学定义。从某种程度上说，“格局”一词属大词、雅词，在正式和官媒里频频出现。从语用学的角度讲，“格局”的用法与意义格外丰富，早已突破原先本义。本文拟以近几年官方媒体上对“格局”的翻译为案例，2 以其语用意义为视角，探讨“格局”的翻译处理。

一.本义翻译：直译为主

如前言所述，“格局”本义为“结构和格式”，稍加扩展，意为形势、局势、布局等。这种情况下，根据其语用环境，可以翻译为pattern， landscape， situation， layout等。

1.译为landscape、layout、architecture、configuration等

格局的意义与landscape、layout等几乎可以一一对应，意为局面、形式、图景等，可直译。

（1）全球经济治理体系只有适应国际经济格局新形勢和新要求，才能为世界经济增长

提供更加有力的保障。

The global economic governance system can only provide stronger support to global growth

when it adapts to the new global economic landscape and its requirements.3

（2）通过主办“一带一路”国际合作高峰论坛，中方期待同各方一道，进一步深化伙伴关系，建设合作新平台，打造发展新格局。

The global economic governance system can only provide stronger support to global growth when it adapts to the new global economic landscape and itsrequirements.3

（3）形成节约资源和保护环境的空间格局。

To develop spatial layouts， industrial structures， and ways of work and life that help conserve.resources and protect the environment.4

（4）优化区域发展格局。

（5）国际战略格局深刻演变

The International Strategic Landscape Is Going Through Profound Changes6

（6）营造平等互信、公平正义、共建共享的安全格局。

…， and contribute to a security architecture featuring equality， mutual trust， fairness， justice， joint contribution and shared benefits. 6

（7）中国积极发展对外建设性军事关系，形成全方位宽领域多层次军事外交新格局。

China actively develops constructive relationships with foreign militaries. A new configuration of foreign military relations which is all-dimensional， wide-ranging and multi-tiered is taking shape. 6

2.译为pattern、model、form、structure、system等

针对“格局”之本义，直译为pattern，model，system、style， setup， format、structure等，为结构、格式、模式、范式、形式之意。比如：2017年9月22日至24日在上海举行的“2017浦江创新论坛”之主题“格局与使命”在各种宣传材料上（包括主会场背景）均翻译为“patterns and prospects”。

（8）打造共建共治共享的社会治理格局。

Establishing a social governance model based on collaboration， participation， and

common interests.4

（9）推动形成人与自然和谐发展现代化建设新格局。

To develop a new model of modernization with humans developing in harmony with nature.4

（10）国防和军队改革取得历史性突破，形成军委管总、战区主战、军种主建新格局……

Historic breakthroughs have been made in reforming national defense and the armed forces： a new military structure has been established with the Central Military Commission exercising overall leadership， the theater commands responsible for military operations， and the services focusing on developing capabilities.4

（11）现代社会治理格局基本形成，社会充满活力又和谐有序。

A modern social governance system has basically taken shape， and society is full of vitality， harmonious， and orderly.4

（12）统筹城乡区域发展，良性互动格局加快形成。

We pursued balanced development across rural and urban areas and regions and sped up the formation of a pattern of positive interplay.5

（13）……构建城乡社区治理新格局。

…and develop a new model of urban and rural community governance.5

二.引申义翻译：意译为主

由于“格局”引申意义丰富，需根据具体语用意义进行灵活处理。

1.译为vision， insight， big-picture thinking等，意为远见、视野、胸怀等。

（14）大时代需要大格局，大格局需要大智慧。

A great era calls for great vision， which in turn requires great wisdom.7

2. 译为stage， ground等，可与new连用，意为新天地、新阶段、新局面等。

（15）强化举措推进西部大开发形成新格局。

We will strengthen measures to reach a new stage in the large-scale development of the western region.4

（16）推动形成全面开放新格局。

Making new ground in pursuing opening up on all fronts.4

（17）形成陆海内外联动、东西双向互济的开放格局。

We hope to make new ground in opening China further through links running eastward and westward， across land and over sea.4

三.省译

某些情况下，“格局”在汉语里有其语用意义，但在翻译时通过信息整合、逻辑重建后，

发现原本语用意义有语义重复现象，翻译时可以省译。鲁迅短篇小说《孔乙己》开篇的那句可作为典型例子：“鲁镇的酒店的格局，是和别处不同的”。不同之处在什么地方呢，冒号后面具体道来：“都是当街一个曲尺形的大柜台，柜里面预备着热水，可以随时温酒。” 杨宪益先生在翻译时省译了“格局”，因为后面讲的就是那个“和别处不同的”“格局”：

The wine shops in Luchen are not like those in other parts of China. They all have a right-angled counter facing the street， where hot water is kept ready for warming wine.8

（18）坚持大扶贫格局。

We will continue to advance poverty reduction drawing on the joint efforts of government， society， and the market.4

（19）形成军民融合深度发展格局。

… to achieve greater military-civilian integration.6

（20）这在G20历史上均属首创之举，为挖掘世界经济增长潜力、开辟世界经济新一轮增长格局奠定了坚实基础。

These unprecedented moves in the G20 history have laid a solid foundation for unleashing the growth potential of world economy and ushering in a new round of world economic growth.3

（21）习主席在G20工商峰会（B20）开幕式上首次系统提出以平等为基础、以开放为导向、以合作为动力、以共享为目标的全球经济治理观，倡导共同構建公正高效的全球金融治理格局、开放透明的全球贸易和投资治理格局、绿色低碳的全球能源治理格局、包容联动的全球发展治理格局，为完善全球经济治理体系描绘了路线图。

President Xi also called for joint efforts to ensure equitable and efficient global financial governance， open and transparent global trade and investment governance， green and low-carbon global energy governance and inclusive and interconnected global development governance.3

（22）长江经济带生态优先、绿色发展格局不断巩固。

Along the Yangtze Economic Belt， efforts to prioritize ecological conservation and boost green development were strengthened.5

以上几例中，“大扶贫”、 “军民融合深度发展”、“世界经济新一轮增长”、“公正高效的全球金融治理”、“开放透明的全球贸易和投资治理”、“包容联动的全球发展治理”、“军事竞争”等已然是一种“格局”，或曰“局面”，因此英译时省译了。

结语：一个有趣的现象是，“格局”不仅在官方话语体系里受到青睐并被赋予越来越丰富的内涵，该词还在老百姓话语系统里大行其道，语用别有一番风采。不过，从语用角度看，总体感觉是后者似乎多了一些调侃味道。如：经常听到说某某人“格局不高”，甚至“没有格局”，意为见识不够、气度不高、胸怀不大、眼界不宽， 似可译为narrow-minded或者short-sighted等。
