The Furthest Distance in the World is a poem taken from a poetic collection titled as Bird and Fish by Indian poet Tagore. Its language is so simple, however thought?provoking. Tagore said that the furthest distance in the world is not between life and death, for the people who love each other, a final death can never separate two hearts. Likewise, in some relationship, for example, the love between male and female, or the affection among friends or relatives, although there is a short distance away, yet poles apart—to see little of each other though living nearby. While the love between the fish and the bird perhaps is the furthest distance in the world, because the former is swimming in the deep sea while the latter is flying in the sky. The inherent difference between as a being in the sky and a being in the sea can hardly be removed. This sentimental(多愁善感的) thought comes from a rational respect to the natural rule, and also a profound understanding of human relationship and existence. Bird and fish, in the poem, are two graceful symbols, standing out to show Tagores aesthetic reflection upon life.
Tagores poetry is embedded(把……牢牢嵌入) with profound ecological wisdom. His poetic verses have combined the peace of his heart, his penetrating(深刻的) insights, his exceptional aesthetic ability and his profound feelings. In his poetry, it is easy to feel the emotional presentation of the harmonious scenes in the natural ecological system, and the internal harmony between the rhythms of life and of nature and the universal consciousness of the harmony among gods, earth and man. Tagores poetry typically possesses beautiful language format, and neat perfect rhythm. As a poet philosopher, he uses poetry and songs which are full of the perceptual language to express the respect about the “person” as the core of the vast system of life, and form the “Tagore” style of life aesthetics, to which The Furthest Distance in the World is a best illustration.
