A lot of earthquakes happen in the world every year. Why do earthquakes happen? Scientists tell us the outside of the earth is made of a number of different plates (板块). The plates move very slowly. Sometimes they stop and dont move for a long time. When some of the earths plates move suddenly, an earthquake happens.

Many earthquakes happen under the sea. Sometimes they happen near mountains. In fact, earthquakes may happen anywhere on the earth.

During an earthquake, the shakings make rocks rise suddenly and even break open. Houses fall. People are killed or hurt. Sometimes whole villages or cities are destroyed.

Can we do something to keep ourselves safe from earthquakes? Scientists have studied earthquakes and made maps that show “earthquake belts”. In the areas in these belts, its possible for earthquakes to happen. In these areas we can make houses strong enough to stand against earthquakes.

In the future, scientists will be able to predict (預言) exactly when and where an earthquake will happen. They can tell us what to do and how to do it as well.

I was waiting to cross on a busy road of New York City when a young lady came to me from my right, pushing a baby stroller (婴儿车) and saying something softly over her dear child. Oh, no, she was going to get hit. Yet I wait for a few seconds before reaching out to her. In my mind, I could see it all: the yellow taxi knocking into them heavily, the woman losing hold of the stroller, the stroller and baby falling in different directions...

“What are you doing?” a man said. His voice brought me back to reality: The man had come out of nowhere, grabbed the womans arm, and pulled her back greatly just in time to avoid the taxi. The woman was shocked. She had not realized her near death.

I saw this man become a hero for the day. He saved two lives. I, however, the silent stranger who just stood there, saw everything and did nothing. Why didnt I do anything immediately? Why did I wait for five seconds? But then I realized that a part of it was that I was afraid. Afraid that I could have been wrong about my guess: What if she got annoyed by my action? What if I looked like a fool?

Years later, I could still see that scene (情景) fresh in my mind. I now think about our society, and the way I have been raised. We look around the bus, noticing empty seats between people, and all those who choose to stand for 15 minutes rather than sit next to strangers. Kids grow up with the warning that if they talk to strangers, they will end up getting kidnapped (誘拐) and never be seen again.

( )26. The young lady was nearly hit by the taxi because _______.

A. she was busy saying hello to the writer

B. she was hurrying across the busy road

C. she was pleasing her baby with her whole heart

( )27. We can learn that the writer _______.

A. felt thankful to the man for his sitting next to the strangers

B. was sorry for not helping the lady and her baby

C. thanked the man for his good action

( )28. The writer _______, so she didnt take action at the moment.

A. was afraid of making mistakes

B. was unable to move fast

C. couldnt believe the accident would happen

( )29. The underlined words “grabbed the womans arm” in the passage probably means “______”.

A. shook the womans arm B. took the womans arm

C. pushed the womans arm

( )30. The authors purpose of writing the passage is to show that ______.

A. we are supposed to pay attention to our safety

B. we should think more before doing

C. we need to change our traditional thought about strangers
