■要点诠释

一、构成形式

过去进行时的构成形式是“助动词was/were+动词-ing形式”。例如：

I was sleeping.../You were working...He was crying.../We were listening.../They were playing...

二、时间状语

过去进行时的时间状语通常有this time yesterday、at eight yesterday morning、at that time、from two to five yesterday afternoon和when I walked in the street等。

三、主要功能

1.表示在过去某一时刻正在进行或发生的动作。例如：

What was she doing at nine o'clock yesterday?昨天晚上九点她在做什么？

2.表示在过去某一段时间内进行或发生的动作。例如：

We were watching TV from seven to nine last night.昨晚七点到九点我们正在看电视。

3.表示在过去某时刻按计划、安排将要发生的动作。例如：

He said they were leaving for Beijing this afternoon.他说他们今天下午要去北京。

【特别提醒】

1.know、like、love、agree、want、wish、understand、believe、hear等表示心理活动的动词，通常不用过去进行时。

2.在考查过去进行时的单选题中，有时没有提供明确的表示过去的时间状语，需要我们在上下文中寻找“暗含”的时间状语。例如：

—Ididn'tsee you here yesterday.Where were you?我昨天在这儿没见到你。你去哪儿了？

—I was staying at home all day to go over my lessons.我一整天都待在家里复习功课。
