CCTV had every reason to choose Yin Shuo as a guardian of national treasure for its blockbuster documentary National Treasures.

Yin Shuo is an excellent dancer. She was the lead dancer of the extravaganza that celebrated the opening of the ‘Belt & Road International Cooperation Summit at the National Grand Theater in Beijing on May 14, 2017. She was also the ‘flying Apsaras in the ‘Silk Road solo at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

And Zhejiang has ample justification to present its national treasures in one episode for the documentary.

For a taste of the unique cultural glory of Zhejiang Province and the city of Hangzhou, one can go to the Zhejiang Provincial Museum, where the history of this ‘land of opulence is fully celebrated. The three magnificent exhibits in the collection of the museum were featured in the ‘Zhejiang episode of CCTV documentary National Treasure on the night of January 28, 2018. In the documentary, famous actress Zhou Dongyu appeared to highlight the museums ‘three national treasures, one of which is a bridal sedan chair representing the wedding tradition of Ningbo, a harbor city in eastern Zhejiang.

Made in the late Qing Dynasty, the wooden sedan chair is the crystallization of the labor of more than 10,000 man-days, hence its Chinese name ‘wan gong jiao. With elaborate gold foil decorations, it is the most lavishly made existing bridal sedan representing the Ningbo style of bridal sedan chair craftsmanship.

A highlight of the ‘Zhejiang episode of the documentary was a dance solo by Yin Shuo, who was also the beautiful ‘flying Apsaras in the extravaganza that celebrated the opening of the ‘Belt and Road International Cooperation Summit at the National Grand Theater in Beijing on May 14, 2017.

“It all felt like my destiny,” Yin Shuo shared her story.

The destiny came in 2009. Yin Shuo was chosen as the lead dancer in the debut of dance drama Wedding Attire: A Girls Dream made at the Ningbo Grand Theatre in April 2009.

“I worked really hard on the dance drama, spending most of that year rehearsing in Ningbo. Every day I walked out of the dance room soaked up in sweat, but I felt happy because I fell in love with the dance drama. I felt lucky because my days in Ningbo inspired me a lot more than expected in my career as well as personal life.”

Born in a ‘singing and dancing family, Yin Shuo majored in classic dance at Beijing Dance Academy after graduation from the Hangzhou-based Zhejiang Art School. She brought home a silver medal from the 8th China National Dance Contest in 2006, for her outstanding performance of a solo. Her performance at the 4th CCTV Dance Championship caught the attention of the directing team of the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.

With the storyline structured as a eulogy to the faithful and passionate love of a woman, the drama illustrates the unique wedding tradition of the Jiangnan people in China in a theatrical, artistic and truly poetic way. The drama has toured around many countries and regions and received overwhelming recognition from critics and general theatergoers alike.

“My mother-in-law, who was at that time just the mother of a friend of mine, got to know me when she was watching the dance drama. Isnt it amazing?”

“I got a wedding dress as a wedding gift from the Ningbo Singing and Dance Troupe. I will never forget the day when I sat in a red bridal sedan in Harbin, wearing that dress and waiting for the most romantic and beautiful moment in my life to come,” Yin Shuo recalled.

Her appearance of just several minutes in the CCTV documentary means enormously to Yin Shuo. The thrill comes from not only being so close to the national treasure. “It is a piece of art that makes me feel so proud to be able to represent in a choreographic way.
