Abstract:Reading is an important channel to acquire knowledge. Both as a principle way and an objective in English learning, reading can help students achieve language competence. Lack of rich and various teaching means, the tedious “duck-stuffing” teaching mode has put an end to the students interests and initiative. Even worse, students are anxious about reading. Multimedia-assisted teaching is able to bring the nature of reading and the students initiative and creativity into play, which is of great improvement in teaching mode and teaching strategies.

一、Introduction
TThere is no doubt that reading is essential to acquire overall proficiency in English for learners. However, because the current English teaching methods are very boring, many junior middle school students are weak in English reading and lack the motivation to further study. Thus, students are expected to learn the information from their textbooks and the teachers lecture. With the development of science and technology in the late 20th century, Multimedia-assisted language teaching has become an important and widely used teaching method.The rise of Multimedia-assisted language teaching can date back to the 1950s, but it was only in the experimental stage at the research institutions.
二、The advantages of Multimedia-assisted English reading teaching
MMultimedia-assisted English reading teaching refers to the application of a variety of media and technology, store, process. Transfer the information of English teaching in order to achieve the optimization effect in English reading teaching and learning. The Multimedia-assisted English reading teaching using modern science and technology means to combine the data, text, sound and graph, using multimedia optical disc, projector and other equipment in the teaching activities. There are many advantages of Multimedia-assisted English reading teaching will be introduced in the following.
三、The application of Multimedia-assisted teaching to English reading class
The author here illustrates how to use multimedia in reading teaching. Before reading, if teachers can play VCD or show some animated pictures or background knowledge concerning the text, students attention will be attracted and they will certainly take interest in what they are join to read. Take Junior English for China Students Book 3 for example, when teaches teach Lesson 26 The man who never gave up , teacher can play the VCD of his invention, which draws the students attention immediately. And then by questioning and brainstorming, students thinking develops. In this case, their schema has been activated and they are eager to know how Tomas Edison invented 1,093 inventions.
四、Conclusion
Firstly, now that multimedia can assist learning teachers should know clearly that how and when to make good use of them. The purpose of utilization of multimedia technology is to improve teaching, but teaching isnt intended for multimedia. Teaching can not without using multimedia, but using multimedia doesnt mean promoting teaching efficiency. On the other hand, it makes teaching more lively, because multimedia technology combines text, graphic, sound, animation, and video. But if we put that too much emphasis on visual and it will lead to the fact students concentrate not on teaching contents but on media. So students are not able to grasp teaching contents well. Under this circumstance, the teacher must be a good supervisor and a good tutor.
