Since 1947,Newt Wallace, 93, has walked the same paper route every week, delivering copies of the Winters Express to the residents of Winters, California, setting the new world record for the oldest paperboy, according to the World Record Academy. Mr Newt Wallace is a full eight months older than the current Guinness World Record holder, Ted Ingrain.

Newt Wallace speaks about delivering newspapers the way some people speak of a first love.“l dont hunt or play golf; I deliver papers, I get to see the people I know,”Mr Wallace said recently as he walked his route.

Mr Wallace still remembers the thrill of shouting“Extra, extra, read all about it!”on street corners in Muskogee, Okla., in 1930 and being the primary news source for locals who did not have radios. By 1931, at age 12, he had a route delivering The Muskogee Times-Democrats afternoon edition.

In the winter of 1946, Mr Wallace, who had recently finished serving in the military in Long Beach, California and was working at a paper in Upland, heard that The Winters Express was for sale. He bought the paper and the building that housed it for $13,500, running it until 1983, when his son became publisher. After retiring, he continued to type columns, wrote up the towns history page and took the local temperature. Now he focuses on delivery.

While Mr Wallaces shyness and impaired hearing mean he says little when he drops off papers, readers are fondly protective of him. Still, the job can be tiring, and Mr Wallace has thought about giving it up.

“Hes tried to quit, but I tell him,‘Show me three friends who are your age, retired and still alive,”Charley Wallace said. “He thinks about it and goes back to his desk.”

Around the world, 62 million girls are not in school. The Let Girls Learn program aims to change that.

At 13, Hawa Yorke left her home in Ghana, Africa, to live with an aunt who promised to send her to school. Instead, the aunt put Yorke to work. Determined to go to school, Yorke returned home and began selling water in a nearby city to raise money for her education. What hurt her most was that her father had the funds to pay the school fees , but he chose to spend the money on a motorcycle.

Yorkes story is familiar to girls growing up in Ghana. There, a girls place is in the home. She is expected to learn to cook and clean and, one day, get married and have children. Educating girls is considered a waste of money. Nearly 55% of girls in Ghana have no access to school education. Cultural beliefs say education is not a wise investment(投資).

The Let Girls Learn program is working to change this view of girls education. Today, it works in 13 countries, and therere plans to expand the program. Volunteers help communities develop a plan for fixing problems that prevent girls from getting an education.

Recently, Let Girls Learn hosted a 24-hour event at which girls in different parts of Ghana joined Peace Corps volunteers, tech experts, and university students to develop solutions for the barriers to girls education. Yorkes team came up with an idea for an app that sends a recorded message to parents phones from a Ghanian celebrity(名人) about the benefits of girls attending school.

Yorke, now 22, is about to finish high school. She plans to attend college and study computer science. She says working alongside college students at the Let Girls Learn event strengthened her determination. “1 know if I study hard, I, too, can go to the university and live a happy life,”says Yorke.

Tilda, an orangutan(猩猩)at the Cologne Zoo in Germany, appears to have found out that if she communicates like a person, she can better catch the attention of zoo-keepers.

She is the first wild-born Bornean orangutan known to produce human-like sounds. She is also the only wild-born orangutan that can whistle tunes, just as humans do.

Tildas background is a mystery, but its thought that she was a circus animal when young.“It is our belief that Tilda learned to produce these calls from humans while she was in the entertainment business, probably by copying a human trainer,” lead author Adriano Lameira of the University of Amsterdams Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics, told Discovery News. Tilda is now producing the calls all on her own without inspiring, and with a specific goal in mind.

Lameira and his team got the results after making recordings of Tilda and then examining her communications. Two of her calls are unknown among other orangutans and show human-like features, the researchers find.

For one call, Tilda uses her tongue to produce different sounds, just as a human can. The process she goes through to make the sounds is similar to a human producing voiceless consonants(輔音), such as saying the letters“p”“k”and“t”. For the other call, Tilda makes a low sound thats similar to humans producing vowel sounds. Both calls require that she rapidly open and close her mouth in rhythms similar to those of human speech.

The meaning of her calls is clear, because she often points her finger to food in the zoo-keepers hands as she makes these sounds.“I would translate them into, ‘Come here and give that food to me,”Lameira said.

32. What can we infer about Titda from the passage?

A. She was born in a circus.

B. She has been influenced by humans.

C. She can sing simple songs just as humans do.
