Believing overweight among school children is the result of bake sales, the Education Department of New York declared that bake sales will be banned all through the states, as a part of their new “wellness” policy.

The ban gives a harder time to schools tying to earn money, because of budget difficulties. Bake sales have proven to be highly profitable toward schools with young people because the startup costs are very small. Allie,a Roslyn High School freshman, agrees that bake sales are needed for school supplies. “I think its wrong for schools to ban bake sales because a lot of schools need the money to be raised. Our school could really use the money for new uniforms.”Allie also commented on the bake sales apparent cause of child overweight. “I feel that it is the students choice to eat the baked goods. lf they want it, let them have it.”Jessica, another Roslyn High School freshman, had a different opinion.“I feel that children can not always stay away from items such as cupcakes. It might be better if the amount of bake sales were limited, and only allowed students to buy one item.”

New York Education advisors are having trouble coming up with substitute product for students to sell. A plan of advertising healthier foods has come into play. However the department needs to consider if students will go for items like vegetables. Allie and Jessica dont think so.“Students might not like the healthier foods. This way, the schools are gaining less money.”Allie shares. Another plan to think about is the idea of not selling food products altogether. Alternate programs are being conducted throughout New York schools, such as walkathons, as a healthy way for students to earn money for their schools.

In 1943, when I was 4, my parents moved from Coeur dAlene, Idaho, to Fairbanks, Alaska, where adventure was never far away.

We arrived in the summer, just in time to enjoy the midnight sun. All that sunlight was fantastic for Moms vegetable garden. Working in the garden at midnight tended to throw her timing off, so she didnt care much about my bedtime.

Dad was a Railway Express agent and Mom was his clerk. That left me in a mess. I usually managed to find some trouble to get into. Once I had a little fire going in the dirt basement of a hotel. I had tried to light a barrel (桶) of paint but couldnt really get a good fire going. The smoke got pretty bad, though, and when I made my exit, a crowd and the police were there to greet me. The policemen took my matches and drove me home.

Mom and Dad were occupied in the garden and Dad told the police to keep me, and they did! I had a tour of the prison before Mom rescued me. I hadnt turned 5 yet.

As I entered kindergarten, the serious cold began to set in. Would it surprise you to know that I soon left part of my tongue on a metal handrail at school?

As for Leonhard Seppala, famous as a dog sledder (駕雪橇者), I think I knew him well because I was taken for a ride with his white dog team one Sunday. At the time I didnt realize what a superstar he was, but I do remember the ride well. I was wrapped (包裹) heavily and well sheltered from the freezing and blowing weather.

In 1950, we moved back to Coeur dAlene, but we got one more Alaskan adventure when Leonhard invited us eight years later by paying a visit to Idaho to attend a gathering of former neighbors of Alaska.

41. What can be inferred about the authors family?

A. His father was a cruel man.

B. His parents didnt love him.

C. His parents used to be very busy.

D. His mother didnt have any jobs.

42. What happened when the author was 4?

A. He learned to smoke.

B. He was locked in a basement.

C. He was arrested by the police.

D. He nearly caused a fire accident.

43. Which of the following is true?endprint

A. Leonhard was good at driving dog sleds.

B. The author spent his whole childhood in Alaska.

C. Leonhard often visited the authors family after 1950.

D. The author suffered a lot while taking the dog sled in Alaska.

44. What is the authors purpose of writing the text?

A. To look back on his childhood with adventures.

B. To describe the extreme weather of Alaska.

C. To express how much he misses Leonhard.

D. To show off his pride in making trouble.

Lita Cabellut is one of Spains most successful artists, but shes barely known in her home country. Whats more, the woman whose paintings now sell for six figure sums spent her early years living on the street.

“My childhood was like that of thousands of street kids around the world,” says Lita Cabellut. She used to wander the streets with other homeless children and slept in the open air. Cabellut was born in a village in Aragon, northeast Spain, in 1961. While she was a baby, she and her mother moved to Barcelona. Her mother lived a poor life and Cabellut was left with her grandmother—but in reality she spent most of her time out on the streets.

“I ran after the walkers. They gave me money to buy packs of cigarettes, sandwiches or jewellery, and I kept the change.” Looking back, she says that “art, of course, was there because art is always around us”, but she didnt think about it in a formal sense—she was occupied with survival.

According to the 201415 annual report, now her vivid portraits can sell for $100,000 or more—actors Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry, as well as chef, Gordon Ramsay, are each reported to own one.

So what changed the course of Cabelluts life so dramatically?

Cabelluts grandmother died when she was about 10 years old and she ended up in a Barcelona orphanage (孤兒院) before being adopted by “a beautiful Catalan family” two years later. She wont reveal much about them, except that they introduced her to art. They took her to Madrids Prado museum, and introduced a 13yearold Cabellut to Goyas A Pilgrimage to San Isidro, which was painted between 1820 and 1823. “I recognized in this painting the expressions in the eyes of the people that I crossed in the streets when I was little,” she says.

“This painting describes the madness, the hope, the terrific moments that the human being can have when you lose your security. For me, when I saw this painting for the first time I felt the complicity of being a witness.”endprint

It made such an impression on her that she tried to copy another Goya, one of his sweeter works depicting a country boy with a country girl and a little dog. The result was not spectacular but her adopted family encouraged the adolescent Cabellut to keep painting—they even paid for private tutors to make up for lost time.

And for the first time in her life, she also started going to school. “It was very difficult for me at school as I was so far behind. Its hard to start learning to read and write when you are 13, and then theres the psychological difficulty of being put into a class where all the children are much younger. I had a lot of private classes at home to learn everything.”

She slowly made progress at school, started to listen to the “voice of art” and decided to study art at Amsterdams Gerrit Rietveld Academy.

The “three big masters” who influenced her the most were Spains Goya, the sculptor Donatello, and German composer Bach. After graduating, she stayed in the Netherlands and now she has a studio in The Hague, but success didnt come easily.

“I did things like giving someone a painting so they would pay my electricity bill and painting a house to get three months credit in a supermarket.” “When you are in a growth period as an artist you have to defend it amazingly because you need that time to find your language and become a master. If you exchange that time for money, you dont get that time back to develop yourself.”

At one point, having established a good relationship with a honorable gallery, she decided to start all over again, and didnt sell anything for two years.

“I had painted a shocking series on child but her colleagues said, ‘No, Lita, you cant do this. People dont want this. Paint more angels, those angels that sell so well.” I said “No” and I lost my gallery.

Although Cabellut has held solo exhibitions in London, Dubai and Seoul, she is little known in her motherland. Two shows in 2017 are aimed at remedying this: a retrospective (回顧展) at Barcelonas Antonio Vila Casas foundation, and an exhibition at A Corunas contemporary art museum where her studio will be recreated.

45. What can we know about Lita Cabelluts childhood life?

A. She was adopted by an orphanage in 1973.

B. She was given birth to in the Netherlands.

C. She lived an ordinary life with her mother.

D. She lost her grandma at the age of twelve.

46. Where did Lita Cabellut firstly get to know Goyas A Pigrimage to San Isidro?endprint

四、任務型阅读(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填一个单词。

What You Are Is a Allrounder

A allrounder is someone with many interests and creative pursuits. Its easy to see your multipotentiality as a limitation or a pain that you need to overcome. But what Ive learned through speaking with people and writing about these ideas on my website is that there are some tremendous strength to being this way. Here are three allrounder super powers.

One: idea synthesis. That is, combining two or more fields and creating something new at the intersection (交集). Innovation happens at the intersections. Thats where the new ideas come from. And allrounders, with all of their backgrounds, are able to access a lot of these points of intersection.

The second allrounder superpower is rapid learning. When allrounders become interested in something, we go hard. We observe everything we can get our hands on. Were also used to being beginners, because weve been beginners so many times in the past, and this means that were less afraid of trying new things and stepping out of our comfort zones. Whats more, many skills are transferable across disciplines, and we bring everything weve learned to every new area we pursue, so were rarely starting from scratch.

The third allrounder superpower is adaptability; that is, the ability to fit in whatever you need to be in a given situation. Abe Cajudo is sometimes a video director, sometimes a web designer, sometimes a Kickstarter consultant, sometimes a teacher, and sometimes, apparently, James Bond.endprint

Hes valuable because he does good work. Hes even more valuable because he can take on various roles, depending on his clients needs. Fast Company magazine identified adaptability as the single most important skill to develop in order to thrive in the 21st century. The economic world is changing so quickly and unpredictably that it is the individuals and organizations that can pivot (靈活变通) in order to meet the needs of the market that are really going to thrive.

Idea synthesis, rapid learning and adaptability: three skills that allrounders are very good at, and three skills that they might lose if pressured to narrow their focus. As a society, we have a vested interest (既得利益) in encouraging allrounders to be themselves. We have a lot of complex problems in the world right now, and we need creative, outofthebox thinkers to deal with them.

In fact, some of the best teams are made up of a specialist and allrounder paired together. The specialist can dive in deep and implement ideas, while the allrounder brings a breadth of knowledge to the project. Its a beautiful partnership.

Therefore, I say, embrace your many passions. Follow your curiosity down those rabbit holes. Explore your intersections. Embracing our inner wiring may lead to a happier, more authentic life. And perhaps more importantly—allrounders, the world needs us.

五、书面表达(满分25分)

请阅读下面短文,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

Educational researchers have found that there is a strong connection between reading and academic success. In other words, a student who is a good reader is more likely to do well in school and pass exams than a student who is the weak reader.

Good readers can understand each sentence and how the text organized. They can understand ideas, follow arguments and find implications. They know most of the words in the text already. They can also determine the meaning of many unfamiliar words from the context. If failing this, they can use their dictionary effectively. In summary, good readers can obtain from the writing what is important for the particular task they are interested in. And they can do it quickly!

Educational researchers have also found a strong connection between reading and vocabulary knowledge. In other words, students who have a wide vocabulary are usually good readers. This is not very surprising, since the best way to acquire a wide vocabulary is to read extensively, and if you read extensively you are likely to be or become a good reader!

So if you want your children to be successful at school, encourage him or her to read. Reading will help your children develop the reading competence thats important for academic achievement.

五、One possible version:

As is vividly shown in the short article, parents should encourage their children to read more books, since educational researchers show us there are strong connections between reading and academic success.

As far as I am concerned, reading informs us of what is happening around, helps us remain updated about what is changing and encourages us to think and imagine. Read one good book, and we will know what the joys of reading are.

Take myself as an example, after reading the famous novel Gone with the wind, I was impressed by the heroines optimism and independence. The more I read her stories and experiences, the better decisionmaker I become.

In conclusion, reading is important in changing our life so it is necessary to develop the habit of reading. I suggest that our school hold different reading clubs where we can share our favorite books and review the latest ones.
