High school students in Shanghai have three-to-four hours of homework each night. One mother looked at her once happy, now tired son and decided that enough is enough! People now have called her “lion mom” because she loves her child just as fiercely as a lion protects her babies.

“Lion moms” are among the growing number of parents. They think that the education has lost its way and that their kids are not really learning the things they need to. And in fact, there are “lion moms” not only in Shanghai. In some North American cities, such as Toronto, parents have successfully advised schools to reduce the number of hours of homework on weekends and during holidays.

But a study also shows that homework does make a great difference to students’ grades on all tests, such as the gaokao and PISA.

North America doesn’t have a gaokao, but China does. It’s true that students and parents, even “lion moms”

have to face the truth. Until the system changes, that much homework will still remain.
