Bridge exhibition to open in London to mark 120th anniversary of Tower Bridge
The Museum of London Docklands is to open a new exhibition on Friday, celebrating the 120th anniversary of Londons iconic Tower Bridge, the museum announced Thursday.
The new exhibition, Bridge, will allow visitors to view rare contemporary and historical artworks of the most iconic bridges above the Thames river, which will include paintings, photographs and films.
Focusing on different themes, such as River, Building, Crowds, Icon and Bridge, the museum will show the impacts of those bridges on the people, the construction of the bridges and design in the future, as well as unique perspectives from artists works.
“To cross a London bridge is to really see the city. Londons bridges give a view of the capital impossible to appreciate from its jumbled medieval street plan. Most of the time we are in a maze of streets and the city reveals itself in fragments. On a bridge, however, the full iconic panorama is laid out,” said Francis Marshall, senior curator of the museum.
Alongside the exhibit, 16 hybrid photographs of the bridges in London will also be unveiled, showing “then and now” views of the bridges across the ages in the city.
The 16 hybrid images are juxtaposed by historic views, taken by photographers in late 19th and 20th century, with their current perspectives.
“Contrasting historic shots with those of today allow us to see how the city has changed over time. Or in some cases how it has remained the same,” the curator said.
With the River Thames across central London, the city has abundant river history and bridge culture. Bridges have been playing a very important and irreplaceable role in peoples life ever since.
Among over twenty bridges over the River Thames, Tower Bridge was officially open on June 30, 1984. Stretching 244 meters long, about 40,000 people cross the bridge everyday.

D. Tower Bridge was officially open on July 30, 1984, stretching 244 meters long
3. We can learn from the passage that .
A. Tower Bridge has a history of about 120 years
B. the museum will show the impacts of common people
C. the 16 hybrid images are juxtaposed by current views

The Brazilian government says it has invested billions of dollars in infrastructure, security and social enhancements as part of the preparations for the World Cup. While the government says these investments will have longterm benefits for society, independent analysts say the impact is mixed.
Urban planners say the $11 billion spent on stadiums and infrastructure has provided jobs to some poor Brazilians, but the public works have also driven up housing costs and forced the least wealthy residents further away from jobs and services.
Particularly controversial has been the socalled pacification program in informal communities, or favelas. Special police, called UPPs (Police Pacification Units), have been deployed in dozens of favelas to drive out drug traffickers and other criminals.
The results have been mixed, according to Urbanism Professor Chris Gaffney, from the local Fluminense Federal University.
“One benefit is we have seen a dramatic decrease in mortality rates through gunfire, because the police no longer come in and open fire randomly in these pacified communities. We have also seen an increase in petty crimes, rapes and burglaries,” said Gaffney.
Gaffney said traffickers belonged to these communities and imposed their own kind of instant justice, whereas the police are viewed with suspicion. He said the gangsters have just moved their operations to other favelas.
Nevertheless, the program has brought some order to previously lawless neighborhoods.
“These places were closed in many respects to the formal market. So the UPP goes into the favela and it removes the barrier of the drug traffickers and allows all kinds of market forces to flow through it, whether it is tourism or statesponsored projects or formalized businesses to come in the form of banks,” explained Gaffney.
The investment in social programs by the World Cup organizing body, FIFA, is another positive development, said Sports Management professor Lisa Delpy Neirotti of George Washington University.
“There has been a lot of educational programs, teaching young people about the environment, using football to educate them about other issues in terms of, like, AIDS, and getting them to come and go to school,” said Neirotti.
She added that under FIFA pressure, the government has adopted some proenvironmental measures such as recycling waste at the stadiums and ensuring the structures meet the guidelines of the LEEDS energy and environmental design program.
“The biggest challenge is the legacy, will these programs continue? Will people remember to recycle?” asked Neirotti.
The Brazilian government says billions of dollars will be added to the economy because of the World Cup, but many Brazilians believe the money will go to only a few.
Critics note several European cities have rejected proposals to host such megaevents. They believe the model needs to be reexamined if host nations are to avoid public protests like those that have accompanied the Brazil World Cup.
4. What is independent analysts attitude towards government investments?
A. They are positive about these government investments for society.
B. They are conservative about these government investments for society.
C. They are enthusiastic about these government investments for society.
D. They are negative about these government investments for society.
5. Chris Gaffney believed that .
A. a decrease in petty crimes is one benefit
B. the program has brought mixed results
C. a dramatic decrease in mortality rates is one benefit
D. the program has brought some order to neighborhoods
6. We can infer from the text that .
A. these government investments will have longterm benefits for society
B. Special police have been deployed in dozens of lawprotecting favelas
C. Lisa Delpy Neirotti is positive about the investment in social programs
D. billions of dollars has been added to the economy because of the World Cup
7. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Different opinions about government investment for the World Cup.
B. Discussion about whether government should invest for the World Cup.
C. Advantages over government investment for the World Cup.
D. Disadvantages over government investment for the World Cup.

British scientists have identified a set of 10 proteins in the blood that can predict the onset of Alzheimers and call this an important step towards developing a test for the incurable brainwasting disease.
Such a test could initially be used to select patients for clinical trials of experimental treatments being developed to try to halt progression of Alzheimers, the researchers said, and may one day move into routine use in doctors clinics.
“Alzheimers begins to affect the brain many years before patients are diagnosed (and) many of our drug trials fail because by the time patients are given the drugs the brain has already been too severely affected,” said Simon Lovestone of Oxford University, who led this work from Kings College London.
“A simple blood test could help us identify patients at a much earlier stage to take part in new trials and hopefully develop treatments,” he said.
Alzheimers is the most common form of dementia, a brainwasting disease which in 2010 was estimated to be costing the world $604 billion a year. The fatal disease affects 44 million people worldwide, with the number set to triple by 2050, the campaign group Alzheimers Disease International says.
Several big pharma firms including Roche, Eli Lilly, Merck & Co and Johnson & Johnson, are pursuing various approaches to get to the root cause of Alzheimers and try to find treatments to halt its progression.
Yet over the past 15 years, more than 100 experimental Alzheimers drugs have failed in trial. Lovestone and other experts believe this may be because drug trials are conducted too late, in patients whose condition has already gone too far.
A predictive test for use before people develop symptoms would help researchers select the right people for drug trials, and help show whether the experimental drugs are working.
SEARCH FOR ALTERNATIVE TEST
Previous studies have found that PET brain scans and tests of lumbar fluid can be used to predict the onset of dementia from people with a less severe condition known as mild cognitive impairment (MCI), but these tests are expensive and invasive, so scientists are keen to develop a cheaper, simpler blood test.
MCI includes problems with daytoday memory, language and attention. It can be an early sign of dementia, or a symptom of stress or anxiety.
Around 10 percent of people diagnosed with MCI develop dementia within a year. Apart from regular assessments to measure memory decline, there is currently no accurate way of predicting who will or wont develop dementia.
For this study, published in the journal Alzheimers & Dementia, Lovestones team used blood samples from 1,148 people—476 with Alzheimers, 220 with mild cognitive impairment and 452 elderly controls without dementia. They were analyzed for 26 proteins previously found to be linked with Alzheimers.
The team found 16 of these 26 proteins to be strongly associated with brain shrinkage in either MCI or Alzheimers and then ran a second series of tests to see which of these could predict which patients would progress from MCI to Alzheimers.
With this second series, they found a combination of 10 proteins capable of predicting with 87 percent accuracy whether people with MCI would develop Alzheimers disease within a year.
Experts in the field welcomed the results but said they should be replicated in larger studies before an Alzheimers blood test could be rolled out for use in doctors clinics.
“The results reported today are interesting, but as the authors point out there is still a very large amount of work remaining until a usable blood test for Alzheimers disease becomes available,” said Adrian Pini of the MRC Center for Developmental Neurobiology at Kings College London.
James Pickett, head of research at the Alzheimers Society, said the research “does not mean that a blood test for dementia is just around the corner.”
“These 10 proteins can predict conversion to dementia with less than 90 percent accuracy, meaning one in 10 people would get an incorrect result,” he said. “Accuracy would need to be improved before it could be a useful diagnostic test.”
8. The underlined word “dementia” in Paragraph 5 probably refers to .
A. a system about health
B. a serious infectious illness
C. a brainwasting disease
D. a widespread disease
9. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

B. These 10 proteins can predict conversion to dementia with over 90 percent accuracy.
C. James Pickett said the research means that a blood test for dementia is possible.
D. MCI includes problems with daytoday memory, language and attention.
10. The passage is probably from a .
A. lab reportB. medical report
C. research paperD. science story

Dear Mike,
I am very glad that you will have a trip in Canada. Now Id like to share some information about Canada with you.
Canada is one of the largest countries in the world, second only to Russia, and has always been famous for its fantastic natural scenery. The vast majority of Canadas population of more than 30 million people is urban. Therefore, Toronto and Montreal are known internationally for their metropolitan lifestyle, beautiful architecture and unique culture. Toronto, the largest city in Canada, ranks among the most multicultural cities in the world. In the heart of Toronto is the Canadian National Tower, which is often called the CN tower for short. Montreal, a port in the province of Quebec, is the second largest city in Canada, and also the second largest Frenchspeaking city in the world, Paris being the largest. Niagara Falls is perhaps the bestknown natural phenomenon in Canada, which is shaped like a semicircle.
With all of these attractions, you will find that this is an unforgettable experience. (146 words)

I Want, I Do, I Get
Theres a great song out there by Jimmy Cliff, one of reggaes top artists, that in six words summarizes just how you succeed in life: I want! I do! I get! These six words are a very powerful way of connecting what you want with what you will achieve.
First comes wanting something—a better life for yourself, your family, more money, a better job, whatever it is you dream about and long for. You desire it, you dream about it, you daydream about it, you yearn for it.
But thats not enough. Next and this the part too many people forget about—comes the doing. All of the wanting in the world is not going to move you one inch closer to what you want: you have to do. You have to find a better job, change jobs, take risks, write software, try new things, stop doing old things, go to college, work, act, do. The doing is the absolutely indispensable connection between what you want and what you get.
Finally, if you keep doing what needs to be done, if you keep adjusting what you do to move you closer to what you want, you get. Maybe not easily, maybe not as quickly as movies and television portray, but it will come.
One final philosophical note about these six words: notice that “I” is three of them? Not what others want, not what others say you are “supposed” or “should” do. Whats more, no one is going to do it for you.
You are the key to making these six words work.
