三、阅读理解(共15小题,每题2分,满分30分)

Are you looking for a different kind of travel experience that doesnt involve some characterless resort (度假地)? If youre looking for an alternative to the allinclusive resort with its scheduled fun and summer camp feeling, you may be ready to add a little adventure to your travel. And adventure travel specialists can help you plan your next trip on the road less traveled.
Something Different
“The term can be deceiving,” laughs adventure travel expert Karen Moore, “because adventure to one person can be climbing Mount Everest, but for someone else it can be diving in Costa Rica.” Moore, who works for the The Adventure Travel Company, says that adventure travel can mean anything thats a little bit off the beaten track (惯例). “Its about exploring more into the country itself,” she explains. “Its about getting more of a cultural education, by going into smaller communities... it can just mean doing something different.”
Accomplish Something Real
For Simon Coward, the director of Adventure Trippin Tours, a company based in Calgary, adventure travel needs to have an element of exploration. “I think you need to be pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and expanding your cultural and social experiences,” he says. Coward, whose company focuses on challenging adventures with a journey element, says that adventure travel should have some kind of goal, whether its a summit you want to reach or a skill you want to develop.
Planning is the First Adventure
When it comes to planning your perfect adventure, both Moore and Coward recommend doing lots of research, including surfing the Internet and asking friends for advice. Talking to a travel agent who specializes in adventure travel is another good idea, because as Coward points out, “a lot of the best things to do in the world cant be found in guidebooks!”endprint
Group Travel or Flying Solo
Organized group travel is a great option if you like the security of being with people you know. Having a knowledgeable guide can also ensure you make excellent use of your time—you wont have to read maps or navigate unfamiliar public transit systems alone. If you expect more challenges, however, solo travel is a great way to explore and discover new places on your own, meet people and have all sorts of unexpected adventures.
Two Important Items to Pack
Moore, who has traveled to 41 countries, says the only thing you really need for offthebeatentrack travel is a good sense of humour and a great sense of adventure. “You have to be flexible and open to experiencing really cool things,” she laughs.
36. Which of the following is discouraged by Moore?
A. To do some research before travelling.
B. To go travelling with a sense of humor.
C. To have an allinclusive resort vocation.
D. To go on an offthebeatentrack travel adventure.
37. What can we learn from the text?
A. Adventure travel can be very dangerous even if well planned.
B. To ensure that you can enjoy your adventure, youd better not set a goal.
C. Adventure Travel means doing something different with a group of people.
D. Travelling alone may mean more challenging experiences than travelling in a group.
38. Which can be the best title for this passage?
A. Plan your adventure travel
B. Travel with adventure specialists
C. Travel with senses of humor and adventure
D. Look for a different kind of travel experience

There are many different eBook readers available on the market these days, but three stand out from the pack: the Amazon Kindle, the Barnes & Noble Nook and the Apple iPad. Each has their own pluses and minuses and all are excellent devices, but its easy to get overwhelmed with all of the features. If youre in the market for an eBook reader and are looking at the Kindle, Nook or iPad, check out the handy guide below which will help you make your decision.
The Amazon Kindle
There are two varieties of the Kindle—the WiFi only version, and the WiFi + 3G. The Kindle has a 6inch E Ink screen, which is much easier on the eyes than your traditional laptop or desktop screen. Looking at one, it looks amazingly like a matte piece of paper, and there is no glare or reflections. Its exceptionally light and sized close to a book, so it doesnt feel like you are holding a clunky device. The Kindle also features the Webkit browser, which is sufficient if you just want to look something up online while youre reading, but its definitely not for heavy or regular internet use. Still, its interesting to see the Web in grey.endprint
The Barnes & Noble Nook
There are actually two varieties of the Nook to choose from, the Nook and NookColor. The standard Nook features a 6inch E Ink screen. The NookColor features a 7inch, fullcolor touchscreen LCD screen, and offers enhanced books, magazines, newspapers, & interactive kids books, and can be used as a media player as well. Both the Nook and NookColor include the unique LendMe feature, which allows you to share eBooks with your friends, something that the Kindle lacks. B & N also has a Lifetime Library, which allows you to store your favorite books for download anytime, anywhere, with any device that you have the Nook application installed on. With over 2 million titles to choose from, youve got a great selection of books to read.
The Apple iPad
The Apple iPad is not a dedicated eBook reader. Rather, it is a computer device with eBook reader functions. The iPad features a 91inch fullcolor touchscreen LCD, and because of its larger screen size you can turn the screen horizontally and have 2 pages of an eBook open at a time, just like a real book. Just like the NookColor, though, the drawback is that it is LCD, so you might not be able to read on it comfortably for as long as you could on a device with an E Ink screen. The iTunes store offers you both eBooks and audiobooks that you can download to your iPad. Those who want a tablet computer that can also serve as an eBook reader may consider buying one.
39. What kind of person may be advised to buy the Kindle?
A. A serious reader who doesnt care about fancy functions.
B. A person who gets on line a lot and likes chatting with friends.
C. One who wants a tablet computer that can also serve as an eBook reader.
D. One who wants an upgraded reading experience with color and lots of features.
40. What benefits cant users enjoy from the Nook according the text?
A. A lifetime library with books to download.
B. Sharing ebooks with your friends.
C. Two types to choose from.
D. 9.1inch fullcolor touchscreen.
41. Which should you choose if you want to buy an eBook reader with a large screen for your child who likes listening to audiobooks?
A. The Kindle.B. The Nook.

Despite what you may believe, heart attacks rarely happen “out of the blue.”
In fact, your body may be trying to warn you of an approaching heart attack for days, weeks, perhaps even a month or two before it occurs. Unfortunately, by the time you actually recognize youre suffering a heart attack; it could be too late to prevent death or reduce heart damage.
Socalled silent heart attacks, with signs and symptoms that are mild or seem unrelated to the heart, have long concerned cardiovascular (心血管) expert Dr. Chauncey Crandall. So Dr. Crandall recently created a special free video presentation about the four most severe warning signs to watch for.
Statistics show a clear link between a delay in heart attack treatment and death or disability. Thats why its essential to know exactly what your heart is trying to tell you with warning signs like those discussed in Dr. Crandalls video.
Although developed as an educational tool, this video rapidly became a big hit, with 5 million viewers in just a few months. Newsmax Health Publisher Travis Davis puts this down to the fact that the video hits close to home for many Americans, especially because heart disease is Americas No.1 killer. In fact, in the U.S. alone, nearly 1 million people suffer their first heart attack each year.
Plus, in the video Dr. Crandall also tells the reallife story of one man who suffered a “widowmaker” heart attack after ignoring the warning signs—and almost paid the ultimate price. The story is scary but eyeopening, because Dr. Crandall outlines what could have been done to actually prevent this from progressing to the lifethreatening stage.
Dr. Crandall, medical editor of the Newsmax publication Heart Health Report, has a positive message: you dont have to be a sitting duck for a deadly heart attack. In fact, according to Dr. Crandall, heart disease can be prevented—and even reversed—with the right information and simple lifestyle adjustments.
43. What is the reason for a delay in heart disease treatment according to Dr. Crandall?
A. Unawareness of warning signs.
B. Improper lifestyle.
C. The sudden attack of heart disease.
D. Doctors lacking experience.
44. What does the word “this” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A. The video presentation by Dr. Crandall.
B. The success of the video.
C. Heart disease as No. 1 killer.
D. Making a video for education.
45. The last two paragraphs are intended to .endprint
A. tell us the severity of ignoring the warning signs of heart disease
B. inform us that we can do something to prevent heart disease from progressing
C. make us convinced that heart disease can really result in death if ignored
D. discuss the possibility of heart disease being cured if adjustments are made in advance

A desire for digging out our roots strikes us all at some point and to a varying degree. It is a call from within: our origin. In the late 1960s it became common practice for many African Americans to explore their long lost African customs and traditions, religious beliefs. Though they had been separated from their African motherland for nearly two centuries, many sought comfort and identity away from the land they were born and raised in.
In the short story ‘Everyday Use by Alice Walker, an AfricanAmerican writer, we meet one such person. Dee is a young African American woman with a good education, intelligent, confident, and fashionable, who is deeply influenced by the calls for Black Power and cultural freedom—so much so that she gives up her original name and acquires an African one. However, as I intend to demonstrate, those that choose to pursue the traditions of their ancestors often do so at the risk and expense of their real heritage, which is found in the home of their parents.
Contrary to Dee, her sister, Maggie, who is described by her mother, Mrs. Johnson, as unintelligent and unattractive, still lives traditionally and simply with her mother in the rural South.
From an early age—we are lead to understand—Dee was determined to defeat her surroundings and move ahead. Yet, in her efforts to leave her life behind and move beyond the limitations her rural homestead offered her, she risks cutting herself off from her family roots and setting roots elsewhere.
The heart of the story comes when Dee asks her mother for her greatgrandmothers quilt (棉被), which she once turned down, because she considered it as oldfashioned and out of style. Now she states that she wants it because it includes clothes that Dees great grandma used to wear and pieces of uniforms that Dees great great grandma wore during the Civil War. And she thinks of it as ‘something artistic and wants to take it to hang on a wall. The problem is that the mother has already promised to give the quilt to Maggie as a wedding present. Dee is annoyed at this. She believes that her sister will be ‘backward enough to put the quilt to everyday use. In response, the mother says “I hope she will!” Maggie and the mother thinks that using a quilt for its intended function would honor their ancestors just as well, if not better, than hanging it on a wall. The struggle reflects the characters quite different ideas about their heritage and identity.endprint
In the story, the quilt itself is a very meaningful item in the sense that it has history on it. However, it also symbolizes values, which are passed down from generation to generation.
Another important theme is standing up for whats right—not just for yourself, but for others too. The mother stands up at the end by snatching the quilt from Dee and saves it for Maggie. She understands how much the quilt means to Maggie; she also understands that Dees reason for wanting the familys belongings is because the new fashion is African, and Dee really wants to be popular. That is why she rejected the name her mother gave her. In former days, she didnt even care about the house or any of its contents; in fact, she hated it and may even have burned it down to get away from it.
46. Why do many African Americans seek their roots after separtated so long?
A. Because they hope to return to their motherland.
B. Because they attempt to get away from their family.
C. Because they desire to achieve a sense of identity.
D. Because they know they will be popular by doing so.

49. The result that Mrs. Johnson gave the quilt to Maggi reveals that .
A. quilts can play its role only when they are put to everyday use
B. Mrs. Johnson was dissatisfied because Dee rejected the name she gave her
C. those living a traditional life can pass down their values and heritage
D. the traditional cultural identity beat the impractical modern one
50. What does the author mainly argue for?
A. Mrs. Johnson and Maggie understand the meaning of family heritage better than Dee.
B. Dee has been well educated, so she knows how to make full use of their heritage.
C. Alice Walker is a great writer, who is well aware of family roots and heritage.
D. Quilts are the symbol of family heritage and should never be put up on the wall.
四、任务型阅读(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填一个单词。请将答案写在答题卡上相应的横线上。
Is it better to be loved or feared? Niccolò Machiavelli, a great thinker of Italy, gave an answer 500 years ago and many people are in agreement with him. “It may be answered that one should wish to be both,” he said, “but because it is difficult to unite them in one person, it is much safer to be feared than loved.”endprint
Now behavioral science is showing that Machiavelli had it partly right. When we judge others, we look first at two characteristics: how lovable they are (their warmth, communion, or trustworthiness) and how fearsome they are (their strength, agency, or competence). Although there is some disagreement about the proper labels for the features, researchers agree that they are the two primary dimensions of social judgment.
Why are the two features so important? Because they answer two critical questions: “What are this persons intentions toward me?” and “Is he or she capable of acting on those intentions?” Together, these assessments lay the basis for our emotional and behavioral reactions to other people. Research by Amy Cuddy and Susan Fiske of Princeton, and Peter Glick of Lawrence University, shows that people considered to be competent but lacking in warmth often elicit (引起) envy in others, an emotion involving both respect and hate that cuts both ways. When we respect someone, we want to cooperate or attach ourselves to him or her, but hate can make that person the victim of harsh reprisal (报复). On the other hand, people judged as warm but incompetent tend to elicit pity, which also involves a mix of emotions: Compassion moves us to help those we pity, but our lack of respect leads us ultimately to neglect them.
So which is better, being lovable or being strong? Most people today tend to emphasize their strength, but that is exactly the wrong approach. Those who highlight strength before establishing trust run the risk of eliciting fear, and along with abnormal behaviors, because fear can destroy relations and cause others to stay away from them.
A growing body of research suggests that the best way to influence is to begin with warmth rather than strength. Warmth is the carrier of influence. It promotes the communication and absorption of ideas. Prioritizing warmth helps you connect immediately with those around you, demonstrating that you hear them, understand them, and can be trusted by them. Once they trust, all positive emotions flow!
五、书面表达(满分25分)
阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
Im sure many people are thinking about making a difference by doing great things. There are so many big problems, and they require big solutions, right?
Actually, sometimes little things can make a really big difference. I learned this lesson one day seven years ago with my father.
Papa came home late from work, looking very tired. His eyes were already halfclosed. Papa sat down on the sofa without a word. It was quiet. I decided to say something. I started chattering about nothing in particular. Nonsense, actually, like why Winnie the Pooh only wears a short red shirt. I was saying all of this in the voice of stitch, the troublemaking little alien from the Disney movie Lilo & Stitch. Papa always loved it when I did that, and he started laughing loudly.endprint
By the time I had acted out half the movie, Papa was howling with laughter.
I was delighted that I had made my badtempered Papa laugh so much. “Did you like it?” I asked excitedly.
“Of course I did,” he said. “Did you know that whenever you make me or Mama laugh when we are tired, you make us feel a lot better, and less tired?”
I shook my head, astonished that I could actually do a thing like that.
Papa smiled, “You do.”
Amazing, I thought. There are a billion people out there thinking BIG, and all I ever did was use a tiny ‘talent of mine to please my Papa. By doing so, I changed the mood of my family, changed the way they thought of life.
A small act like that, I realised, can actually change the world. So why not start small? You will make a difference.

五、One possible version:
As a child, the writer made her father relieved from great tiredness by telling funny stories. She learnt an important lesson from the experience—small things can make a difference.
Every little thing you do today matters. Many people, however, ignore such a truth. They always attach great importance to something big, forgetting that only those who have the patience to do small things perfectly will acquire the skill to do big things.
Nothing can be done except little by little. On the one hand, doing small things well helps us to accumulate experience and master skills, which set a good foundation for our future development. However big the task is, it is worth doing.
As middle school students, in my opinion, we should aim high, but meanwhile we should never measure a task by its size.“Great achievement only belongs to those who can do small things perfectly.”Aristotle said.
