New Practical English Teaching and Design in Classroom

Abstract:The aim of English teaching in vocational college is to train practical English ability.The paper illustrates the important significance of English teaching method in classroom and introduces the method of New Practical English.

0 Introduction

New practical English(the following is briefly called The Book)is edited by An Xiaocan and pressed by Higher Education Press.The Book follows the goals of cultivating practical people and the teaching orientations of aiming to application,directing by practicality and limiting to enough to use.Through the guidance,all these are circled by the same topic.We should carry out the principle of learn a little,know a little,use a little,put listening,speaking,reading,and writing together and combine learning and use.This book emphasizes two points:One is to combine establishing language basis and cultivating practical ability from the beginning to the end.The other is to make reading,listening,speaking and writing separate and combine,to give prominence to integrate training.Listening and reading are important means of input,and speaking and writing are that of output.Hence,teacher should lead students to communicate in English naturally and encourage them to use English in and out of class as soon as possible.

1 The Principles of Teaching Design in Classroom

The three important factors in teaching are teaching aim,teaching material and teaching method.The teaching aim is to fix on the teaching orientation,the teaching material is the media of transmitting knowledge.The teaching method is to ensure to realize the teaching aim and to carry out assurance means of teaching materials idea.Teaching method includes both the teacher how to teach and the student how to learn.During the course of teaching activity,teaching aim,teaching material and teaching method are indispensable,connected and supplementary each other.

In The Book teaching and design in classroom,our tenet is intensive explanation and more practice,take classroom as the location of practicing and improving students practical ability.Through teachers carefully designing every procedure,its aim is to cause students study interests,and let students know that it is teacher who help them study.They should go ahead step by step following teachers guidance.we should let students speak aloud in class and express themselves by spoken,feel they have gained something in every period,and have a sense of achievements.Through own teaching practice,we got better results.

2 Teaching and Design in Classroom

Combining with my own teaching experiences,based on The Books unit structures and features,the principles of teaching design in classroom and teaching objectives of basic requirements has described,next we will mainly talk about the teaching and design about listening,speaking,and reading of this book.The difficulty of task should accord with students level and practical ability,put up ladder for students properly.

2.1 Listening and Speaking

Speaking refers to Talking Face to Face in teaching material.Task-designing is to find out spoken Englishs basic expressions.The basic studying method is team work,to accomplish cooperatively and teachers summary.

In this part,sample 1 in Talking Face to Face is an advertisement.The topic is customers guidance,the task is to find out important information of service ways,the method is to discuss the important information,the means of activity is team work,at last teacher summaries advertisements language features.Guide ss to know useful expressions for making reservation.

2.1.2 Reading

For this part,we seize firmly preview before class.Students preview new words and text before class which is a precondition of implementing class teaching and design.we must put emphasis on students preview before class,make students clear next times studying contents,teachers teaching method and their own tasks,do a purposeful preview.Through preview,students can understand most part of contents in teaching material,in class we only spend few time on important points and difficulty ones,and use most of time to do the practical practice.For example,Passage 1 of unit 4 in the Book.

Design:The topic is to introduce hotel functions,the ways of activity is team work,the task is to discuss service function and value it(only use convenient or inconvenient).

The procedures are:answer ss difficulties during preview,lead them put questions and induce them thinking.Teacher put emphasis on introducing hotels introduction and lead the path for understanding.

The method is to put questions to the first paragraph,the body and the last paragraph and their separate functions(the first paragraph is salutatory,the body is about service and the last paragraph is formulas).

2.2 Other Ways of Design

Besides,we might combine speaking and writing.The objectives of these two are to improve Ss English practical ability of speaking and writing.Use speaking to provide preparation for other language skills.Conversation is the key point in the whole unit,thus ss can be brought to the actual conversational situation immediately and experience personally in actual language environment.Combining this part with Applied Writing,it is because speaking and writing in the teaching material are all encircled by the same topic,this is also one of features of teaching material.When practicing the ability of oral expression,at the same time,inserting part writing,it can make Ss feel that writing is not so dull.Students should understand samples of Applied Writing,learn its structure feature and language form,and can simulate simple applied writing.Use oral expression to describe writing,it can improve Ss interest and grasp patterns and fixed expressions firmly.
