Dear Reader,
In this issue of World Architecture we focus on the Pritzker Laureate of 2014, Shigeru Ban.
Quite different from his compatriot laureates of recent years, Ban is a Japanese architect strongly influenced by American architectural education. His years as a student both in the Southwest and in the Northeast America forecasted many points in his later career path.
Ban carried the ideological agenda originated in the West in the 1960s, with the belief that building activity may contribute more directly to social equality, and that architects can be social activists. He defines his own way by going to the front where emergencies of human drama and conflict peak. He pioneers the architectural practice in war zones, disaster hit areas and depressed regions. He is among the earliest who impart temporary buildings with architectural meaning. Today, we see the impact of Ban in a variety of social-architectural practices, from Cameron Sinclair's Architecture for Humanity to John Lin's Rural Urban Framework.
Ban doesn't stop at ideological expression. He has unique curiosity in transmitting gravity in the clearest and most beautiful path through the most unexpected material. It is these things that puts Ban far ahead of his contemporaries, making his work one of the most important voices of contemporary world architecture.
Also in this issue we have a special coverage of Alvaro Siza's first building in mainland China. We hope that the silence and poetics of the building can bring a different topic of debate in this boisterous time in Chinese architecture.
