Whenever anyone measures educational success， East Asian countries are always top scorers. But in a recent league table， a European country， Finland， was top of the class. South Korea was still in second place， though. Britain was at number six. What is the secret of Finland and South Koreas success？ Time to do some homework.

In Korea the school day is long—typically seven or eight hours， followed by hours of private tutoring in the evenings. All this hothousing leaves Korean students so tired， they sometimes fall asleep[入睡] in class next day. Worries about the effects of late night cramming led the government to force cramming schools to close by 10 p.m.

Finnish children spend the least time in class in the developed world， often finishing just after lunch， with about one hour of homework a day. Private tuition is uncommon. The British school day is quite long in comparison[比较]， around six hours， and

在韩国，学生的学习时间很长——基本每天上七八个小时的课，紧接着晚上还要进行几个小时的私人补习。这种温室强化式的拔苗助长令韩国学生身心疲累，有时导致他们在第二天的课堂上打瞌睡。政府也担心补习社进行深宵填鸭式催谷，所以规定上课只能到晚上十点为止。

在发达国家中，芬兰的孩子上课时间最短，通常是午饭过后放学，每天大概就做一个小时的功课。私人课外辅导很少见。相比较而言，英国的学时还挺长的，约有六小时，中学生每晚还会花两三个小时自习。

韩国的教育系统与很多亚洲国家一样，竞争激烈，连入读最有名的补习社也要争个头破血流，只为抢得争胜先机。芬兰的教育则远没有那么残酷。班级里有教无类，不分高低、不论排名。英国学校（在这一点上）再次居中，大学名额竞争较为激烈，各大院校从考试成绩到学生满意度等每一方面都力争名列榜首。

韩国和芬兰的教育同样优异，但其教育体系却大相径庭，那么英国可以从这两个教育强国身上学到些什么呢？

亚洲和芬兰确实有一些共通点。在那些国家，教师的社会地位很高，教育备受重视。虽然态度不是立马可以转变过来的，但转变是可以实现的。别看现在芬兰荣登教育榜首，但在上世纪七十年代以前，芬兰的教育曾经很差劲，而通过彻底改变教学模式，芬兰教育仅在短短一代人的时间内就成功赶超各国，跃居榜首了。
