The history of rice cultivation in the Yellow River Estuary dates back at least 3,000 years. Modern rice cultivation in this area began in the 1940s, during the revolutionary military and civilian settlement in the Bohai reclaimed area, which was part of the anti-Japanese base. Amidst the hardships of battle and diligent farming, large fields of rice started to appear on the barren, saline-alkaline land. This process witnessed the proud struggles of state-run farms and people’s communes, as well as the rise of the Shengli Oilfield and Dongying City. In the new century, it has been revitalized and is now on a path toward rejuvenation.
