When we see numbers on an app, money doesn’t make a sound. But realmoney does, and you can even guess how much you have from those excitingsounds! But have you ever wondered1 why we might want to put our moneyinto pigs? Not everyone agrees2 on the reason!

One idea says that hundreds of years ago, people in Western Europeused to put their money in old jars3 made from a type of clay4. The name ofthe clay sounds similar5 with“pig”. Then the people who made the jarsdecided to begin making them in the shape6 of pigs, because that soundedlike a fun idea.

However, not everyone believes that story. Others think making jars inthe shape of pigs because in some countries, like Germany, the animal isthought to bring luck, so a pig-shaped jar might be a good place to put money.

There are similar beliefs7 in China. Andthere is evidence8 that pig-shaped jars wereused in Java, Indonesia, in the 14th century9or earlier. So some think this tradition wasbrought from the East to Europe.

We may never know for sure, because notmany very old piggy banks still exist10. But weknow that the only way to get the money outwas to break them!
