Have you ever wanted to make a dif⁃ference in your community? That's exactlywhat volunteer Mary Levtzow does. Levt⁃zow volunteers as chairwoman for the Hun⁃ger Ministry of Saint Paul Lutheran Churchin Westlake, Ohio.
Being chairwoman includes orga⁃nizing food drives, finding and organizingvolunteers, known as“Hunger Warriors”,gathering donations, and raising money.Levtzow has held her current volunteerposition for the past 26 years. Drivers pickup local bread donations every morningfrom grocery stores and local eateries.They also hand⁃deliver food and financialdonations to the centers that serve peoplein need. Levtzow said that her group can al⁃ways use a little more help than they have.They contribute food, money, and other do⁃nations to 24 groups. Their greatest in⁃volvement is with Redeemer Crisis Centerin Cleveland.
Helping others was a part of everyday life for Levtzow when she was growing up.Her mother was a director of nursing ata nursing facility near the family's home.Levtzow and her brother, John, volunteeredthere as teens. Levtzow plans to continuegiving back for as long as she can. She en?courages people of all ages to volunteer inwhatever way they can.
“The best advice I have is that tryand see what you can do to help everyfriend you make,”Levtzow said.“Childrenneed food, parents need food, and olderpeople need food,” she added. Levtzowhopes that younger generations will con⁃tinue her work.“The biggest challenge iskeeping it going—keeping people involvedand keeping the next generation wanting tohelp,”she said.
