One night in December 2011, a bear came into the city of Vancouver inCanada. It walked through the streets past houses, shops and offices until itfound some food in bins outside a restaurant and started eating. In the morning, someone saw the bear and called the police. They came with a vet from thecity zoo, put the bear in a lorry and took it back to the mountains. Luckily, thebear was safe, but what happens in other countries when big animals comeinto cities?
In Cape Town, South Africa, baboons come into the city when they arehungry. They go into gardens and eat fruit from trees, or into houses and takefood from cupboards and fridges! Baboons are strong animals and they canscare people. But the city can be dangerous for baboons too.
Sometimes, they are killed in traffic accidents. Human’s food is very badfor their teeth because it has a lot of sugar. Now, there are baboon monitorsworking in Cape Town to return the animals to the countryside.
In Berlin, pigs sometimes come into the city to look for food. They eatflowers and plants from parks and gardens, and cause accidents in the streets. Some people like the pigs and they give them food and water to drink. Otherpeople do not and want the government to stop them.
In Moscow, there are 35,000 wild dogs. They live in parks, old houses, markets and train stations. Many people give them food and water. Some makesmall houses for the dogs in their gardens. This helps them in winter, when thetemperature is ﹣10ºC and there is a lot of snow and ice.
In some cities, you can see birds, insects, mice and squirrels every day.But sometimes, it is dangerous when big animals come from the countrysideto find food. We need some good ideas to stop animals coming into the citywithout hurting them.
