while 既可以作连词，也可以作名词，还可以用在固定搭配的短语中。

1.while 作连词时，表示 “在……的时候；与……同时”。

注意，while 可以放在句首使用，也可以在句中使用。

含磷火柴

法国化学家索利亚于1830 年发明了第一种基于磷的火柴。加入了白磷的火柴变得更容易点燃了。但是白磷火柴依然有很大的问题，它不仅容易自燃，而且毒性也很强，在生产火柴的工厂里，工人们深受白磷蒸气的毒害。最终，白磷火柴在1906 年被禁止生产和销售。

《福尔摩斯小姐：伦敦厄运》是根据1888 年伦敦布莱恩特和梅火柴厂女工大罢工的真实事件改编，当时火柴厂以牺牲工人健康为代价生产含磷火柴，导致员工牙齿疼痛、腐烂脱落，面部肿胀，严重者甚至会造成器官衰竭。女工大罢工事件为她们争取到了劳动环境和报酬方面的改善，但未能阻止含磷火柴的使用。一直到20 世纪初，英国才停止使用磷来生产火柴。

英国曼彻斯特的人民历史博物馆还开发了一款数字互动游戏，可以让人们体验布莱恩特和梅火柴厂恶劣的工作环境，游客戴上耳机后会听到解说和指示，模拟将火柴装进火柴盒的生产过程。然而，不管你手速多快、正确率多高，总是会被以不合理、不公平的罚款制度克扣工资，比如被抓住讲悄悄话、掉了一根火柴等。
