IS GRASS ALIVE?
Yes. Grass is a living(活的) plant like a tree, a bush(灌木丛), or a flower. It grows when it is healthy.
WHAT IS LAWN GRASS?
There are many kinds of grass. Some grass we eat, some we build with, some we feed(喂养) to animals. Lawn(草地) grass is a grass that people like to walk and play on.
Look at the lawn statues(雕像) and remember their names. Then try the listening challenge(挑戰)!
1.LISTENING
Listen to the descriptions(描述) of lawn statues and write the first letter of the statue’s name in each circle.
2.Designing a New Gnome
Now that you know a few common(普遍的) lawn statues that people like to put on their lawns, imagine what you would want to put on a lawn. Color your own lawn gnome(地精).
Mowing the lawn
Grass lawns need to be mowed(割草) regularly(定期地) to keep the grass looking nice and neat. You can use an electric mower(电动割草机) or a simple push-mower(推式割草机) like the one in the picture.
With permission(允许) from their parents, some children earn extra money by helping to mow lawns for neighbors(邻居). It can be fun and good exercise too.
WATERINGIT
If you don’t water a grass lawn for a long time, it will turn brown and maybe even stop growing. It’s important to use a sprinkler(洒水器) like the one in the picture or to use a garden hose(管子) to spray(喷,洒) water over the lawn.
This will help your lawn stay healthy and green!
RAKING GRASS LEAVES
After you mow the lawn, or after leaves fall onto the grass, you need to rake(耙平) up the cut grass and leaves.
Usually you rake it all up, put it into a big bag and carry it to a spot(地点) where you dump(倾倒) it to make a pile(堆) of natural compost(天然肥料). All those leaves and cut grass can be used to(被用来) grow vegetables and flowers.
SEARCHING FOR WEEDS
In a meadow(草地), plants like dandelion(蒲公英) are common. But on a grass lawn, they are not! Most people only want one kind of grass to grow evenly(均匀地) across their lawn so that it is easy to play games safely on the lawn and is easier to maintain(维持).
So you will need to look for and then pull out weeds(杂草) from the lawn.
