Edinburgh is the worlds festival city. There are twelve festivals all year， halfof which are celebrated during the months of July and August. Hundreds ofthousands of people visit the Scottish capital1 during the summer. Here are some ofthe events they can enjoy.

爱丁堡是世界上的节日之都。全年共有十二个节日，其中一半在七月和八月庆祝。成千上万的人在夏季来游览苏格兰首都。以下是他们可以享受的一些活动。

The Edinburgh International Festival

This is the original2 Edinburgh festival which began in 1947.Actors， musicians， dancers and opera singers from all over the worldperform3 to a large number of people. You need tickets for most eventswhich take place in theatres around the city.

Anyone can perform in the festival andover 20，000 artists take part， so there are always many different kinds ofacts to choose from. Go to the Royal Mile， one of Edinburghs highstreets， to watch performers such as magicians9， acrobats10 andcomedians11 for free. However， it can get very busy as thousands of tourists andlocal people fill the city streets to enjoy the shows.

The largest book festival in the world began in 1983 and takesplace every year in Charlotte Square Gardens in the centre ofEdinburgh. There are over 700 events for people who love books. Youcan meet many writers， talk to them， ask them to sign a book or listen tothem talk about their stories. Children can listen to stories and watchartists draw pictures of the stories.

Music lovers come to this festival to enjoy music shows aroundthe city. One of the best things of this musical festival is the streetcarnival12 which is free to all. Artists perform street theatre， danceand circus13 shows in nice costumes14 and everyone can enjoy themusic and join in the dancing.

This show is 65 years old and takes place every evening during thefestival outside Edinburgh Castle. You can listen to pipers16 anddrummers17 in military bands18， watch traditional Scottish dancing andenjoy a firework in the Edinburgh night sky. More than 200，000 peoplebuy tickets to watch the show live and around 100 million people watch iton TV all over the world.
