When almost everyone has a mobile phone, why are more than half of Australian homes still paying for a landline (座机)?
These days youd be hard pressed to find anyone in Australia over the age of 15 who doesnt own a mobile phone. In fact plenty of younger kids have one in their pocket. Practically everyone can make and receive calls anywhere, anytime.
Still, 55 percent of Australians have a landline phone at home and only just over a quarter (29%) rely only on their smartphones according to a survey. Of those Australians who still have a landline, a third concede that its not really necessary and theyre keeping it as a security blanket—19 percent say they never use it while a further 13 percent keep it in case of emergencies. I think my home falls into that category.
More than half of Australian homes are still choosing to stick with their home phone. Age is naturally a factor—only 58 percent of Generation Ys still use landlines now and then, compared to 84 percent of Baby Boomers whove perhaps had the same home number for 50 years. Age isnt the only factor; Id say its also to do with the makeup of your household.
Generation Xers with young families, like my wife and I, can still find it convenient to have a home phone rather than providing a mobile phone for every family member. That said, to be honest, the only people who ever ring our home phone are our Baby Boomers parents, to the point where we play a game and guess who is calling before we pick up the phone (using Caller ID would take the fun out of it).
How attached are you to your landline? How long until they go the way of gas street lamps and morning milk deliveries?
1. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us about mobile phones?
A. Their target users. B. Their wide popularity.
C. Their major functions. D. Their complex design.
2. What does the underlined word “concede” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Admit. B. Notice. C. Remember. D. Hope.
3. What can we learn about Baby Boomers?
A. They like smartphone games. B. They are attached to their family.
C. They keep using landline phones. D. They enjoy guessing callers identity.
4. What can be inferred about the landline from the last paragraph?
A. It remains a family necessity. B. It will fall out of use some day.
C. It may increase daily costs. D. It is as important as the gas light.

I have a special place in my heart for libraries. I was always an enthusiastic reader, sometimes reading up to three books a day as a child. Stories were like air to me and while other kids played ball or went to parties, I lived out adventures through the books I checked out from the library.
My first job was working at the Ukiah Library when I was 16 years old. It was a dream job and I did everything from shelving books to reading to the children for story time.
As I grew older and became a mother, the library took on a new place and an added meaning in my life. I had several children and books were our main source of entertainment. It was a big deal for us to load up and go to the local library, where my kids could pick out books to read or books they wanted me to read to them.
I always read, using different voices! It was a special time to bond with my children and it filled them with the wonderment of books.
Now, I see my children taking their children to the library and I love it that the excitement of going to the library lives on from generation to generation.
As a novelist, Ive found a new relationship with libraries. I encourage readers to go to their local library when they cant afford to buy a book. I see libraries as a safe haven (避風港) for readers and writers, a bridge that helps put together a reader with a book. Libraries, in their own way, help fight book piracy (盗版行为) and I think all writers should support libraries in a significant way when they can. Encourage readers to use the library. Share library announcements on your social media. Frequent them and talk about them when you can.
1. What word best describes the authors relationship with books as a child?
A. Cooperative. B. Uneasy. C. Inseparable. D. Distant.

3. What does the author call on other writers to do?
A. Sponsor book fairs. B. Write for social media.
C. Support libraries. D. Buy her novels.
4. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Reading: a Source of Knowledge B. Library: a Haven for the Young
C. My Love of the Library D. My Idea About Writing

Technology has changed the ways in which we communicate with each other. For many people, the primary form of communicating these days is via instant messaging. When you run out of space or ideas, you just hit the send button or turn it off. There are no silences between the words. In real life, getting along with another person takes effort and energy. There are moments when neither person has anything to say. Silence can feel awkward and emotions can arise in real life that are difficult. There are moments when things can get painful with another person. Misunderstandings happen, hard truths are revealed (揭露), and feelings can get hurt.
A trend has started to pop up. When difficulty or conflict arises within a relationship, we are simply dropping out of it rather than facing the issue. It makes me wonder if we are simply losing the ability to deal with the messy and uncomfortable parts of life. The result is that we are left with a lot of relationships but not much in the way of nourishing relationships. We have it easy, but we dont have it real.
When we run into conflict with others, the reason we are willing to address the conflict is that we want the relationship and we care about it. We have to remind ourselves that we can wade (跋涉) through that messy river to get to the other side where the relationship can be restored. In psychology, we call this process repair. And the relationship that is formed after dealing with the conflict together is actually stronger than if the conflict had not happened.
We will never end up anywhere deeply satisfying by avoiding challenges. Each moment that we are willing to be uncomfortable in a relationship, to live in and through the messiness, is a drop of gold in the relationship itself. The investment in the hard stuff is finally what makes the relationship worth investing in. The willingness to be uncomfortable with something and the value of that something are part of the same circle.
5. What can be inferred from the first paragraph?
A. Technology has brought people closer.
B. True friends are not embarrassed by silence.
C. Online communication creates misunderstandings.
D. More challenges arise in real-life interpersonal relationships.
6. What is the authors attitude towards the trend mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Carefree. D. Objective.
7. What does the author suggest people do?
A. Try to fix the relationship. B. Step back and avoid conflict.
C. Pay more attention to themselves. D. Learn to identify unhealthy relationships.
8. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To describe a growing trend.
B. To stress the importance of handling conflict.
C. To guide people into meaningful relationships.
D. To show the influence of Internet on relationships.
