Rescue dogs that helped in the aftermath of the terrible earthquake killing thousands of people in Turkey and Syria have been flown home first class. Turkish Airlines upgraded the dogs in honor of their service following the 7.8-magnitude quake, which left over 50,000 dead.

Dogs are often used in rescue attempts when machinery could potentially cause rubble(瓦砾) to fall and put survivors at risk. They sniff out humans and bark or scratch the ground to warn their handlers as to where the scent is strongest.

Rescue dogs from across the globe formed a part of the relief effort, with dogs from countries including the United Kingom, the United States, Germany, Libya, China and Thailand helping in the search for survivors. A day after the earthquake, Mexico announced it was sending a team of 16 of its famous search and rescue dogs to look for people buried under the rubble. Because the country has a tendency to earthquakes, highly specialized teams are trained to help when disasters occur.

A spokesperson David for the Turkish Airlines said, “As we have been experiencing an extraordinary period within our evacuation operations due to earthquakes centered in our eastern regions and affected all our country and nation, we fly our heroic rescue dogs, which are let to sit in cabin this period. Turkish Airlines felt the hero dogs work meant they deserved better than to travel in the goods hold. It was the least we could do to show our appreciation for these heroic dogs' sincere and heroic efforts.”

Turkish Airlines pass the surprisingly calm-looking dogs back to their families, who are dressed in jackets and helmets, as the happy owners paid much attention to them and cry with joy at having their best friends back.

24. What makes the dogs flown home first class?

A. Saving people.D. Narrow escape.

C. Helping owners. B. Terrible earthquake.

25. Why are dogs used in rescue attempts?

A. They are really good at barking.

B. They sniff out people and dig them out.

C. They can signal people where the survivors are.

D. They scratch the ground to help find the handlers.

26. What's Mexico's attitude to the relief effort?

A. Critical.B. Doubtful.

C. Objective. D. Supportive.

27. What can we infer from David's words?

A. He experienced an extraordinary period.

B. The earthquakes had a bad effect on his country.

C. His company showed great appreciation to the heroes.

D. The heroes and dogs deserved to travel in good places.

TikTok announced that every user under 18 will soon have their accounts default(默認) to a one-hour daily screen time limit. It is one of the most aggressive activities yet by a social media company to prevent teens from endlessly flipping online.

If the 60-minute limit is reached, users will be urged to enter a passcode — requiring them to make an active decision to extend their time spent flipping through videos on the app. The move comes after TikTok and other social media platforms have faced years of careful study over their impact on young users.

Cormac Keenan, TikTok's head of trust and safety, said the company consulted researchers and experts from the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children's Hospital when deciding the time limits to set for teen users.

“While there's no collectively-supported position on how much screen time is too much, or even the impact of screen time more broadly, we recognize that teens typically require extra support as they start to explore the online world independently,” Keenan wrote in a blog post.

Keenan added that if a teen decides to turn off this new default limit and spends more than 100 minutes on TikTok a day, they will be required to set a daily screen time limit for themselves. “In our first month of testing, this approach increased the use of our screen time management tools by 234%,” Keenan wrote.

Keenan also announced some updates to the app's Family Pairing feature, which allows a parent or caregiver to link their TikTok account to their teen's and set controls. Parents will be able to filter(過滤) videos with words they don't want to appear in their teen's feed, set a custom daily screen time limit for their teen, and set a custom schedule to reduce TikTok notices sent to their teen.

28. Why does TikTok have a new move?

A. To make teens surf online less.

B. To make teens focus more on study.

C. To make teens have TikTok account.

D. To make teens know about social media.

29. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3 ?

A. Teens can explore the Internet independently.

B. TikTok has asked the professionals for advice.

C. Researchers and experts enjoy being consulted.

D. Keenan has decided time limits to set for teen users.

30. What can parents do for their kids with the Family Pairing?

A. Update their kids' apps.

B. Found feed for their kids.

C. Set a custom schedule for their kids.

D. Make controls on their kids' TikTok account.

31. What is a suitable title for the text?

A. TikTok's New Screen

B. The Teenagers' TikTok

C. One-hour TikTok Account

D. An Aggressive TikTok Move

With our busy lives, it's understandable to look for ways to multitask and save precious time. However, combining tasks within your morning routine may not be the best idea, at least when it comes to health. Many of us kill two birds with one stone by brushing our teeth in the shower, but the wet and warm conditions can create a whole host of issues you may not have considered.

According to Payal Bhalla, Lead Dentist and Clinical Director of Quest Dental, hot water can break down the thick hairs of your toothbrush and reduce its cleaning effectiveness. Cross contamination(污染) can also occur when you use the same water source to wash your body and your mouth, leading to the transfer of bacteria from other parts of your body to your mouth and potentially compromising your immune system.

The showerhead can harbor bacteria, and when you brush your teeth under the showerhead, you may be exposing your toothbrush to those bacteria, again increasing your likelihood of illness. For those in house-shares, there's an increased risk of exposing your toothbrush to someone else's bacteria. Plus, toothpaste leftover can make surfaces slippery—not ideal if it causes a fall. These problems are amplified if you leave your brush in the shower between uses.

“Bacteria can build up on your toothbrush and potentially lead to oral health issues,” says Payal, who recommends keeping yours in a dry and clean place away from potential sources of contamination, such as the toilet or sink.

Although some people believe they're saving water by combining these personal hygiene(衛生) tasks, this may not actually be the case. Payal explains: “While brushing your teeth in the shower, you may end up using more water than necessary. For example, if you leave the water running while you brush your teeth, you may waste a significant amount of water. A more effective way to save water while brushing your teeth is to turn off the tap while you brush at the sink.”

32. Why is “kill two birds with one stone” quoted?

A. To clarify a concept.

B. To introduce a topic.

C. To offer an argument.

D. To criticize a phenomenon.

33. What is the final consequence of brushing teeth in the shower?

A. Polishing toothbrush.

B. Producing more bacteria.

C. Harming the immune system.

D. Reducing cleaning effectiveness.

34. What does the underlined word “amplified” mean in paragraph 3?

A. Lost.B. Sunk.C. Settled.D. Increased.

35. What does Payal Bhalla suggest?

A. Closing the tap when brushing teeth.

B. Having a shower with water running.

C. Using tap water when standing at the sink.

D. Saving water with various tasks combined.

第二节 (满分 25 分)

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In 1996, I was a 23-year-old surgery student at Srirama Medical College in Odisha. Being a good doctor was my dream. Each time I wore my clean and white doctor's coat, I felt joyful. I had a spring in my step while walking the halls of this famous college, trailing behind the senior physicians treating people in real time, not through imitations as we'd been doing so far.

Like many medical students in training, I was assigned the night shift. I was part of an eight-member general-surgery team and enjoy interacting with patients. The fact that I spoke multiple languages gave me an advantage, too.

One hot summer's day, I was on duty along with one other colleague. It was a quiet, and uneventful period, until around one a.m. that night. A tall, well-built and middle-aged man came in on a stretcher(担架) in severe pain. His large frame was doubled over, his hands clenching his stomach to try to contain his pain. We got to work.

Banudhar, the patient, complained of progressive pain in his stomach which was abnormally swollen, a symptom building up over the past four hours. Despite some relief from the painkillers, his continuous discomfort was clear. I suspected an inguinal hernia—a condition that could not have been a sudden occurrence. It had been troubling him for months, but he had ignored the symptoms, carrying on with his work as a rickshaw(人力車) puller to feed his family. He owned the increased pain to “heavier customers”, as he was required to pull more weight. But that night, he just could not carry on.

An acquaintance had driven him to the hospital, but could not stay. Banudhar was alone and terrified. He asked me whether his condition was serious, his eyes wide with worry. Should I be honest? There was no his family member with whom I could discuss these matters. Would honesty make him feel painful further? Would showing sympathy affect my ability to perform my duties?

注意:

1.续写词数为150左右;

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I didn't know what to say, stricken by inexperience and emotion.

第二节

One possible version

I didn't know what to say, stricken by inexperience and emotion. With my palms wet with sweat, I calmed down and told him he could be better. Contacting his wife,I told her that his husband needed an emergency surgery. She burst into tears, saying she lived in a small town and that she would try to arrive at the hospital as soon as she could. After that, I raced against time with senior doctors for an urgent operation. Finally, rescued by us in time, Banudhar had no relative to accompany him. So I did my best to look after him.

It took a few days for his wife to make it to the hospital. I led her to her husband and she wept with relief. She took over my job to take good care of Banudhar. It was one month later that he was discharged. Two months later, I was working in the hospital, finding Banudhar dragging a heavy bag. He awkwardly handed me the bag full of rice and a handful of potatoes. Not only did I feel deeply the preciousness of this humble but precious gift, but Banudhar's faith in me also gave me the strength to carry on my career.
