Laughter burstl out in the classroom.Mr. Johnson, the maths teacher, knew whodid it.
“Grace! Please leave the classroom,”he said.
The class went quiet and everyone looked at Grace, who sat on the fifth row.
“But... Please! I tried to control2 my laughter but it burst out!" Everyone in the classroom burst out laughing, too. Grace laughed a lot. She laughed for nearly every-thing. For example, last week, a classmate told Grace a joke3:
Q: Why does maths teacher always look sad?
A: Because he has to solve4 so many problems.
Grace giggled5. That is why that everyone laughed when they saw Mr.Johnson now.
Every joke would have a different answer from Grace. Sometimes it was a giggle, and sometimes a polite laugh. Sometimes, when Grace tried really hard to control her laughter,it would burst out.
Grace was womed. Was there anything wrong with her? Why couldn't she stop laughing? She thought she needed to do something. So, she ate some fruit, but it didn't help. It just got out of her mouth when she laughed.
Grace made a list of things she found funny: first, laughter; second, people slipping6 on a banana; third, the word“fruit”.
“I will make sure I never laugh at these again,” said Grace.
Next day, there was a Plan A. During library, Jenny moved behind a bookcase and let out a laughter right next to Grace. When Grace heard it, she burst out a laughter, too.And she forgot all about her list! This was not going to work.
It was time for Plan B. Tom, Graces older brother and a scientist, was Plan B.Maybe he could make a tool that could stop her from laughing. When Grace told Tom what had happened to her, the man who was usually serious7 burst out laughing. Grace wondered if this was a family problem. Did they all have the same laughing problem?
“Like chimpanzees8, and even dogs can make him laugh!" Anna, Toms wife, told her.
The thought of her pet dog Doudou started Graces laughing again.
When the laughter finally stopped,Anna said, “Do you know youve just ex-ercised, Grace?”
“How, Anna? We were talking the whole time."
“Whenever you smile even a little, the muscles9 0f your face get to work.So each time you giggle or laugh, it's a completeworkout for your face,”Anna told her.
“Ooh,” said Grace,“will my face build muscles, like my arms then?”
Anna smiled, “Whenever you laugh, the small muscles in your face help pull your mouth up and out in a smile.”
“But what about the sound? That makes others laugh, too,” said Grace.
“When you breathelo, the air will go into your lungsll. But when you laugh, the air is out, leading to those 6ha-ha-hasounds that you cant seem to stop,”Anna answered.“So,Grace, you understand that laughter is natural? So long as youre not hurting anyones feelings, theres nothing wrong with a good laugh."
Grace felt so much better.“Its the tea time. Shall we have a fruit then?”said Anna.
Grace couldnt stop laughing. But she tried to take a breath and made the laughter down. She can do it.
