The Torch (火把) Festival is a traditional festival celebrated among some ethnic (民族的) groups in southwestern China, such as the Yi, Bai, Hani, Lisu, Naxi, Pumi and Lahu, etc. It usually falls on lunar June 24th or 25th, with three days of celebrations. The origin of the festival may have something to do with the worship of fire by ancestors, who believed fire had the power to drive away insects and protect crop growth. For some ethnic groups, it’s a tradition in the festival for elders to share farming experience with young people and educate on taking care of crops.

During the festival, big torches are made to stand in all villages, with small torches placed in front of the door of each house. When night falls, the torches are lit and the villages are bright. At the same time, people walk around the fields and houses, holding small torches and placing the torches in the field corners. Inside the villages, young people are singing and dancing around the big torches that keep burning throughout the night. Other activities like horse races, bullfights, etc. are also held during the festival.

In a horse race of the Yi people in Yunnan, torches are used to form hurdles (欄架) for riders to get through. The Hani people in Yunnan traditionally attach fruits to torches with ropes. When the ropes are broken after the torches are lit, people struggle for the fruits for good luck. For the Lisu people in Sichuan, the festival is an occasion for holding grand torch parades (游行). Big torches are carried by the procession, which is like a fire dragon. If several processions from different directions meet, it’s a tradition to exchange the big torches with one another.

1. Why did people originally light torches during the Torch Festival?

A. To drive away insects.                                     B. To celebrate crop harvests.

The closest thing to watching a film or television for entertainment during ancient times was going to see a shadow play. Folk artists manipulate puppets (操纵木偶) behind the screen, narrating (叙述) stories and accompanied by music.

Setting off firecrackers.

In 1947 a group of famous people from the art world headed by an Austrian conductor (指挥家) decided to hold an international festival of music, dance and theater in Edinburgh. The idea was to reunite Europe after the Second World War.

At the same time, the “Fringe” appeared as a challenge to the official festival. Eight theater groups turned up uninvited in 1947, in the belief that everyone should have the right to perform, and they did so in a public house disused for years.

Soon, groups of students firstly from Edinburgh University, and later from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, Durham and Birmingham were making the journey to the Scottish capital each summer to perform theater by little-known writers of plays in small church halls to the people of Edinburgh.

Today the “Fringe”, once less recognized, has far outgrown the festival with around 1,500 performances of theater, music and dance on every one of the 21 days it lasts. And years early as 1959, with only 19 theater groups performing, some said it was getting too big.

Tonight, we will have a special dinner outside on our back porch in the cool, evening air. I will blow out A LOT OF candles on my birthday cake.

Why do people give gifts in the first place? Throughout the world, many cultures special holidays with gifts and food. Holiday bring people together and allow us to feel a part of the family and community. The gifts and food that we share are all about a sense of gratitude (感激) and joy.

The gifts of a few generations ago were more common and homemade. Even the people who could expensive presents probably didn’t do as much buying and spending as we do today. Gift giving has become a booming industry. Sometimes the meaning behind the tradition gets lost, and the gift giving takes on (呈現) a of its own.

Not only is the pressure on spending money on the right , but many people also find that when gifts become the central point of a holiday, they place too much on receiving, too. It’s all too to have high expectations of what’s in that beautifully wrapped box—but that can set anyone up for .

When the materialistic aspects of the holiday overshadow (使黯然失色) its , it can leave people feeling empty and for something more. It’s no wonder that we often about people having the “holiday blues”—feeling sad or empty instead of feeling and satisfied.

Not all people think the holidays are too materialistic, of course. Most the traditional aspects of the holidays, like getting together and with friends and family. And some love shopping and are just with all the giving and receiving.

But if you’re feeling a little about the holidays, what can you do? One way to take back the holiday spirit is to on traditions and service—putting real meaning into your giving.

范例展示

Dear editor,

The mooncake is loved by people of all nationalities in China. But nowadays, more and more people give their opinions about luxury mooncakes with fancy decorations. I’m writing to express my view about it.

I don’t think it is necessary to buy luxury mooncakes. The mooncake is a token of family reunion. However, some people regard it as a way to show their wealth and position, which completely goes against the original meaning of the mooncake. Besides, the price of some mooncakes is far more expensive than their costs.

All in all, I think what is important in celebrating the festival is respecting the tradition instead of buying something that we can’t afford.

Yours,
