Zheng He was one of Chinas most famous explorers. Towards the end of the fourteenth century, his fleet (艦队) sailed to countries far away.

Zheng He had over 300 ships, some of which were over 150 meters long, and could carry up to 1,000 people. Besides, the ships carried gold, silver, silk, china and other treasures to give as gifts to the rulers of other countries. Some ships even had earth on board so that the sailors could grow their crops for food.

On Zheng Hes first voyage (航海), he set sail across the Indian Ocean. His fleet traveled many days far away from land. One day, they were hit by a storm. All the sailors thought the fleet was going to sink. Then a strange light appeared and after that, the storm passed. The strange light was probably electricity from a thunderstorm, but the sailors in Zheng Hes fleet believed it was a sign of protection from the gods. With the belief, they were happy to follow Zheng He wherever he led them.

Zheng He completed seven famous voyages between 1405 and 1433. He visited many countries in Asia and Africa. He brought back many gifts from the countries he visited, such as medicines, pearls and strange animals. The most famous of them were a giraffe and a zebra.

In 28 years of traveling, Zheng He had managed to share the glory (輝煌) of China with many different countries. When he died in 1435, the stories of his travels made him one of Chinas most famous sailors.

Safety is a huge concern whenever I run with my earphones in. But I need music to run. Otherwise all I hear is the sound of my own breathing. So Ive found a compromise (折中方案): I run with only one earphone in. The music sounds off. Its an imperfect solution.

An updated pair of headphones, called AfterShokz, aim to do better. AfterShokz bills itself as using bone-conducting technology to conduct music from the front of the ear, delivering sound through your cheekbone and inner ear. This keeps your eardrum (鼓膜) free to hear everything else.

“Earbuds (耳塞式耳機) are typically designed to block out all sound, which is fine when you are inside. But when youre outside, you need all your senses. It would be like sending you out cycling with a blindfold on,” says Rod Annet, managing director of AfterShokz.

Heres where AfterShokz comes in. The headphones hook over the back of your head with the main “bud” resting high up against your cheek. This keeps your ear free to delight in other sounds.

So do they work? In a word, yes. During a 45-minute jog, they didnt bounce or shift.

What about the downsides? If youre a huge fan of high-quality sound, you might find the headphones a bit tinny. One friend expressed concerns about missing the ability to get lost in the music as you might be distracted by other noises.

Yet those are all minor details. For me, probably the biggest problem is the price. Ranging between ?49.96 to ?83.29, AfterShokz headphones arent exactly cheap.

With all that considered, would I recommend them? Yes. AfterShokz headphones are quite useful. While jogging out, they were light, painless, and easy to use. They made me feel safer.

28. What is special about AfterShokz headphones?

A. They are a good choice for use at home. B. They can deliver sound through your eardrum.

C. They can make sound beautiful. D. They allow users to hear other sounds.

29. The authors friend thinks AfterShokz headphones ___ .

A. prevent users getting lost B. deliver high-quality sound

C. often get lost while users are running D. fail to allow users to enjoy the music

30. What does the author think of AfterShokz headphones?

A. They are too expensive. B. They seem quite useless.

C. They make users feel pain. D. They are too complex to use.

31. What is the main purpose of writing the text?

A. To express worries. B. To introduce a product.

C. To share a personal story. D. To complain about a product.

D

While car-sharing is a concept (概念) thats catching on, old-fashioned carpooling where a group of people take turns driving each other to work has always faced a resistance (抗拒). In a study on traffic problems by ABC News, 84% of those who drive to work say that they still do it alone. More than half of those lone riders insist that carpooling is just too inconvenient, and 18% say they simply dont know anyone to share a ride with.

Now technology makes carpooling easier and more fun. NuRide, a company which provided an online carpooling service last year, offers daily travelers in the Washington area not just a web-based list of would-be carpoolers but also a way to arrange a trip online. Heres how it works: rider seekers enter the positions where their trip will begin and end, the time they want to leave and if theyre willing to drive or just ride in someone elses car. The websites search engine then looks for matches and makes lists of the names of traveling companions, along with the car model and the exact time and place to meet for each trip. People who want to share the ride can show their interest in joining in online and then meet their car mates when its time to go.

NuRide users arent riding with total strangers. They are required to provide the name of their employer and a work e-mail address, both of which need to be checked before being listed on the website.

To attract users, NuRide offers a frequent rider prize: anyone who shares a ride gets a $1 credit. So far, 2,300 people have signed up. NuRide CEO Rick Steele said that more than 50,000 rides have been arranged on the website, resulting in 1.4 million fewer miles driven and 650 fewer tons of automobile emissions (機动车排放).

32. What is the drivers opinion about carpooling according to the study?

A. 18% of them dont know it. B. Many think it is inconvenient.

C. 84% of them accept it. D. Some consider it dangerous.

33. What can NuRide do for its users?

A. Decide car models for them. B. Give them a list of car owners.

C. Help them arrange a shared car trip. D. Find out their car mates true names.

34. What information does a NuRide user need to provide?

A. His age. B. His hobbies. C. His home address. D. His employers name.

35. It can be inferred that NuRide is helpful in ___ .

A. improving air quality B. promoting driving safety

C. increasing job opportunities D. making people know each other

A patient came to see me about the stress in her life. 36 One was to make her bed from the moment she woke up until she flew out of the door for work. I suggested she experiment by not making her bed for two weeks. She was shocked, probably thinking Id been raised by wolves in a forest. 37

Two weeks later she went into my office beaming (眉开眼笑). She had left her bed unmade for the first time in 42 years—and nothing bad had happened. “And you know what?” she said, “I dont dry my dishes anymore, either.”

38 One was discovering that she had choices in her life that she had never seen before. The other was giving herself permission to be less that perfect. This story shows an important principle about managing time: No one can do it all. Each of us has to make choices and accept trade-offs (交易). The problem is, many people choose in ways that put themselves and their health last. They take better care of their houses and cars than they do of themselves. 39

So what is the solution? Theres an easy way. Decide what you want in your life, and put that first. On a daily basis, that should include regular meals, enough sleep and time with your family. 40 The choice is yours: whatever makes you feel good about yourself and your life. Take a nap. Take a walk. Stop keeping your house as clean as your mother kept hers. Fill more of your time with want-to-dos instead of have-to-dos.

A. However, she went along with my idea.

B. She described all the things she had to do.

C. This woman had made two major breakthroughs.

D. Most people do not take time to relax themselves.

E. They put everyone elses needs ahead of their own.

F. The point is to do something for yourself every day.

G. Above all, you neednt do anything else for yourself regularly.
