There are many idioms or sayings in English that we use when we want to describe re - lationships between and among friends. Here are a few to practice with your friends.

The idiom“through thick and thin”is used to describe a friend who is loyal and sup - portive during bad times as well as good times. It most often describes a friendship that has beenstrong foralongtime.Herearetwoexamples: JohnandLisahavebeen friends

through thick and thin. My best friend and I stayed together through thick and thin.

If two people are“like two peas (豌豆) in a pod”, it means that they get along very well. They are two very good friends and they are very similar to each other. I have never seen Lola and Camille argue; they are like two peas in a pod.

Some friends are especially sympathetic and easy to talk to. They are not judgmental or impatient. They are good at sharing our pain, which helps ease our pain. A friend like this is often called“a shoulder to cry on”.We can go to this person with a problem or sad - ness and this person can bring comfort to us.

“Hit it off”with someone means falling in love with someone immediately or getting along with someone. This usually happens the first time two people are meeting. They often share interests, goals and beliefs. This can happen between friends who like each other at first sight. Carmen and Isabel hit it off at the party and are going to a movie together today. Mike and I did not hit it off on our first date, but we are going to try once more.

1. Which of the following may be friends through thick and thin?

A. Friends who often play games.

C. Friends who are easy to deal with.

D. Friends who share a long friendship.

2. Which of the following idioms describes two similar friends?

A. Hit it off. B. Like two peas in a pod.

C. A shoulder to cry on.D. Through thick and thin.

A. To introduce some English idioms.

B. To explain what a good friendship is.

C. To teach readers how to learn idioms well.

D. To offer some examples of English sentences.

B

One spring morning many years ago, I was exploring for gold on southeastern Alaska,s Kupreanof Island, and as I emerged from a forest of spruce (云杉), I froze in my tracks. No more than 20 paces away in the wetland was a huge wolf—caught in a trap.

Confused and frightened by my approach, the wolf backed away, struggling with the chain of the trap. Then I noticed something: It was a female.

From her appearance, I guessed that she had been trapped for only a few days. That meant her pups (幼患) were probably still alive, surely no more than a few miles away. But I suspected that if I tried to release the wolf, she would turn aggressive and tear me to pieces. So I decided to search for her pups and fortunately, I spotted foot marks on a track skirting the wetland.

I finally spotted the cave at the base of a huge spruce. There wasn,t a sound inside. Wolf pups were shy and cautious, and I didn,t have much hope of luring them outside. But I had to try. So I began imitating (模仿) the high-pitched sound of a mother wolf calling her pups.Noresponse!Afewmomentslater, afterItriedanothercall, fourtinywolves appeared.

They were no more than a few weeks old. I extended my hands, and they doubtfully suckled (吸奶) my fingers. Perhaps hunger had helped overcome their natural fear. Then, one by one, I placed them in a thick bag and headed back.

When the mother wolf spotted me, she stood straight. Possibly picking up the smell ofher young, she let out a high-pitched, sorrowful howl. I released the pups, and they raced to her. Within seconds, they were drinking milk on her belly. In that brief moment, these injured animals and I had somehow entered each other,s worlds.

4. Why did the author leave the wolf trapped in the trap?

A. To observe it closely. B. To search for its pups.

C. To avoid being attacked.D. To seek professional help.

5. What does the underlined word“luring”in paragraph 4 mean?

A. Dragging. B. Seizing. C. Rescuing.D. Attracting.

6. What can be inferred about the pups from paragraph 5?

A. They had not been fed for long.

B. They were not afraid of humans.

C. They played with the author for fun.

D. They knew the author was harmless.

7. Which words best describe the author?

A. Cautious and enthusiastic. B. Considerate and intelligent.

C. Responsible and generous.D. Warm-hearted and ambitious.

C

One night, Pilar was in a deep sleep when she was woken by her cat Inti. Inti was meowing wildly outside Pilar ,s bedroom and throwing himself against the closed bedroom door. When Pilar opened her eyes, she saw that her bedroom was filled with smoke. As she escaped her house with Inti in her arms, she saw that a fire was burning in her kitchen. Pi- lar could easily have lost her life, but Inti would not let that happen. Even though Inti could have escaped the house through a cat door, he wouldn,t leave Pilar.

As amazing as this story is, it is not as uncommon as you may think. Take the example of Charlotte Lee and her horse, Thunder. One summer night, the whole family was asleep with the windows open. It was normally very quiet where they lived. Suddenly, there was a loud noise. Charlotte woke up from her sweet dream, and the noise continued. Then she heard a horse running fast towards the house. The next thing she saw was Thunder standing outside her window, neighing (嘶鳴) and shaking his head. She knew something was wrong. Charlotte quickly got everyone out of the house before the earthquake hit. Thunder hadsaved her life.

There are also stories of wild animals coming to the rescue of humans. One animal known to be a friend of humans is the dolphin. Once, Todd Endris was surfing with his friends when he was attacked by a 13-foot (4-meter) shark. In the middle of the attack, a group of dolphins came to his rescue by forming a protective ring around Todd until he could get safely to shore. Without the help of the dolphins, there was little chance that Todd could have escaped.

No one is sure why animals have so often come to our rescue. However, it is clear that humans and animals enjoy a close relationship. It is important that we care for them as much as we can.

8. Why did Inti throw himself against the door?

A. He was trying to wake up his owner.

B. He wanted to get out of the room.

C. He felt bored and was playing by himself.

D. He couldn,t find the way out because of the smoke.

9. Before the earthquake hit, Charlotte      .

A. closed the windows B. was sleeping deeply

C. ran to warn her neighbors D. got her horse out of the stable

10. Both Inti and Thunder      .

A. were shy and quietB. used to make noise at night

C. were brave and smartD. saved their owners several times

11. Which of the following is probably Todd,s feeling towards the dolphins?

A. Doubtful. B. Grateful.

C. Frightened.D. Bored.

D

People all need friends, because nobody wants to be lonely and a friend can help you

in good and bad times. 16Here are some signs to tell you if your friend is a true friend.

Always honest

Honesty is important for keeping a relationship alive. A true friend always tells you the truth. 17It is important that your friend speaks honestly and never makes up sto -ries.

Your friend is not a true friend if he/ she can never make time for you when you are in trouble. You also need to be reasonable and accept that your friend also has other things to do so he/she can,t always listen immedi-ately to your problems.

Always respectful

19Your true friend may disagree but never insists that he/she is correct.

Always understanding

20A true friend will always be forgiving and understanding even if it isn,t his/her fault. We are all different people and we all make mistakes. A true friend is always forgiv- ing and understanding because he/she doesn , t want to take the risk of losing his/her best friend.

A. Everyone likes to make friends.

B. Sometimes a good friend will turn against you.

C. It may be hard sometimes, but lying can destroy a friendship.

E. A true friend will always have time to listen to your problems and give advice.

We moved there on my third birthday. My first 21is our neighbor Arlene hand- ing me strawberries from her garden through a hole in the chain - link fence. She and her husband, Bill, lived next door.

One day, my parents asked Bill and Arlene whether they,d watch me 22they were out on a date. This 23well for everyone, so it became a somewhat monthly occur- rence. Arlene and Bill didn , t have kids. They had a 24room in their house, which became“my”room. I had a cabinet and boxes of toys and books in that room. Arlene and I would do crafts together. Bill taught me how to 25the lawn tractor and eventually a car (stick and automatic).

When I was about five, I had an idea. My parents were watching TV when I spat it out: “What if I adopt Bill and Arlene as my 26?”My parents said I could go over and ask them. I 27on Bill and Arlene ,s door, sat down in their living room, and said,“Will you guys be my grandparents?”They started crying and 28 accepted. Soon after, they printed out an adoption 29, and it hung on their living room wall from then on.

I remember being surprised that they took my30 so seriously—not because I wasn , t serious, but because I was just a kid. They could have 31it off. Thinking of that moment still brings tears to my eyes. There is something truly magnificent about a child offering her love and32being so excited to accept it. Every child in this world 33enthusiastically responded love.

Arlene passed away in 2013, two days before our adoption anniversary. Bill gave her eulogy (悼词). At the end, he said,“Arlene 34her husband, Bill, and the greatest joy of her life, her granddaughter, Katie. ”

After the funeral, Bill gave me the ring he ,d gifted to Arlene on their 25th wedding anniversary. It,s a simple gold band that I wear on my ring finger as a 35of the kind of love I wish to put into this world.

Sally had trouble speaking in social situations. I,m a registered nurse and I love kids and dogs. I wanted to use Bella to bring her joy, comfort and confidence the way only a dog can.

That morning in January, her teacher led us to a room by the school office.“Sallyhasn,t spoken outside her home in two years, ”she told me.“Her parents have taken her to doctors, but nothing has worked. ”A little girl stood shyly just inside the doorway. Her eyes brightened when noticing my dog.

“This is Isabella Rose. I call her Bella, ”I said.“Would you like to pet her? She doesn,t know anyone here and she ,d like to meet you. She does tricks. Would you like to see?”

Sally nodded. I motioned with my hand. Bella lay down and then rolled over. Sally ,s eyes cheered up.“She,ll do it for you too, ”I said.“I can teach you. ”

I showed Sally the hand signals for various commands. She was a natural with Bella. Soon Sally was able to take Bella at her pace all on her own. I could see her standing taller, more sure of herself each time we met.

One morning, when she was working with Bella, I heard a tiny voice, barely a whisper: “Good dog. ”Sally didn,t take her eyes off Bella, but I wanted to jump for joy. Sally spoke a little more each week, only to Bella at first, but then to me. Later, she started giving voice commands with her hand signals and her confidence rose. Still, she hadn , t spoken in her classroom.

“Could you bring Bella to my class and show the other kids her tricks?”Sally asked me one day. An idea struck me.“Why don,t you do it?”I said.“I know you can. You,re as good with Bella as I am. ”Now, Sally stood nervously in front of her kindergarten class, with Bella sitting calmly by her side. Her classmates focused on Sally, waiting for her to speak. 注意:

The farmer said to the pot,“Didnt you notice that the flowers were only on your side of the path?”Turning back, the pot found it was true that all the flowers were on its side. Feeling puzzled, it asked,“Yes, I did, but does it have anything to do with me? I am just an ugly cracked pot.”“Of course,”the farmer continued with a big smile,“every day, the water from your crack helped them blossom so brightly. If it were not for your crack,we couldn t see those lovely flowers. So there is no need for you to feel ashamed or apologize. It is you who bring us such a beautiful scenery.”

After listening to what the farmer said, the cracked pot finally understood and felt happy. Never had it known that it was useful before. Next day, when they carried water home from the stream as usual, the pot lowered its head and saw the water slowly leaking out from the crack. Below it, color?ful flowers were raising their bright faces to enjoy the water. Making good friends

Friends play an important role in our life. Like air filling our lungs, friendship fills our hearts, allowing us to experience the best life. Friends provide us with com?fort and joy, improve our moods and prevent loneliness and isolation, which has a huge impact on our mental health and happiness. To make true friends, we should be sincere and loyal to our friends. Equally important is that we should support them through tough times. Only when we are truly con?cerned about our friends, can we maintain permanent friendships together.

But not a word came out. Sally had been so excited about putting on a dog show for her class. She had been quite familiar with the hand signals and had practiced for weeks. Now her eyes found mine. I nodded encouragingly. She took a deep breath and opened her mouth. Her mouth—then her whole body—seemed to close in on itself in defeat. Sally stood off to the side, head down. I felt awful. Sally returned to her seat, not looking at anyone, not even Bella.

The next week, she told me she wanted to try again, looking up at me with determi?nation.“Are you sure?”I asked.“You dont want to wait till next year?”“No,”she said. “Today, I can do it.”Then we headed to Sallys classroom. The kids were sitting in a circle on the floor listening to the teacher. We walked to the front of the room. I shook Sally s hands and stepped back. For a few seconds, she stood silently, staring at her classmates. Finally she whispered,“This is Isabella Rose.”Then, a little louder with more confidence,“Isabella Rose.”

e wanted to try again, looking up at me with determina- tion.
