The Necklace is a short story by Guy de Maupassant. It tells the story of Madame Mathilde Loisel and her husband Charles. Mathilde always imagines herself in a high social position with wonderful jewels. However, she has nothing and marries a low-paid clerk who tries his best to make her happy.
Through lots of begging at work, Charles is able to get two invitations to the Ministry of Public Instruction Party. Mathilde refuses to go, for she has nothing to wear. Her husband is upset to see her sadness. Using money that he saved to buy a rifle, he gives Mathilde 400 francs and asks his wife to buy a dress that suits her. Mathilde goes out and buys a dress. However, even with the clothes, Mathilde is still not happy as she has no jewels to wear with it. The couple does not have much money left, so her husband suggests Mathilde borrow something from her friend, Madame Jeanne Forestier. Mathilde picks out the fanciest diamond necklace that she can find. After attending the Ministry of Public Instruction Party, Mathilde discovers that she has lost the necklace.
Mathilde and her husband forage everywhere, but the necklace is not to be found. So they have to take out loans (貸款) from generous friends to buy a diamond necklace that looks just like the one that was lost. It takes them ten years of hard labor to pay the loans back. Towards the end, Mathilde takes a walk, recalling her past and the night when the necklace was lost. Suddenly, she comes across Madame Jeanne Forestier. Mathilde confesses (坦白) about that night and how she worked so hard to return her necklace. Safety is a huge concern whenever I run with my earphones in. But I need music to run. Otherwise all I hear is the sound of my own breathing. So I’ve found a compromise (折中方案): I run with only one earphone in. The music sounds off. It’s an imperfect solution.
An updated pair of headphones, called AfterShokz, aim to do better. AfterShokz bills itself as using bone-conducting technology to conduct music from the front of the ear, delivering sound through your cheekbone and inner ear. This keeps your eardrum (鼓膜) free to hear everything else.
“Earbuds (耳塞式耳機) are typically designed to block out all sound, which is fine when you are inside. But when you’re outside, you need all your senses. It would be like sending you out cycling with a blindfold on,” says Rod Annet, managing director of AfterShokz.
Here’s where AfterShokz comes in. The headphones hook over the back of your head with the main “bud” resting high up against your cheek. This keeps your ear free to delight in other sounds.
So do they work? In a word, yes. During a 45-minute jog, they didn’t bounce or shift.
What about the downsides? If you’re a huge fan of high-quality sound, you might find the headphones a bit tinny. One friend expressed concerns about missing the ability to get lost in the music as you might be distracted by other noises.
Yet those are all minor details. For me, probably the biggest problem is the price. Ranging between £49.96 to £83.29, AfterShokz headphones aren’t exactly cheap.
With all that considered, would I recommend them? Yes. AfterShokz headphones are quite useful. While jogging out, they were light, painless, and easy to use. They made me feel safer.
28. What is special about AfterShokz headphones?
A. They are a good choice for inside use. B. They allow users to hear other sounds.
C. They can make music sound more beautiful. D. They can deliver sound through your eardrum.
29. What does the author’s friend think of AfterShokz headphones?
A. They prevent users getting lost. B. They deliver high-quality sound.
C. They often get lost while users are running. D. They fail to allow users to enjoy the music.
30. How does the author think of AfterShokz headphones?
A. They are too expensive. B. They seem quite useless.
C. They make users feel pain. D. They are too complex to use.
31. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To express worries. B. To introduce a product.
C. To share a personal story. D. To complain about a product.
D
A new device (裝置) works like a solar panel, except it doesn’t harvest energy from the sun. It captures energy from the cold night sky.
A prototype (雏形) of the device produced enough electricity at night to power a small light bulb. A bigger version might one day light rooms or charge phones. It could also power electronics in remote or low-resource areas that lack electricity.
The device makes use of the temperature difference between the earth and outer space to create electricity. As long as one side of it is cooler than the other, the generator can produce electricity. The cooler side faces the sky and is attached to an aluminum plate. That plate is closed tightly under a transparent (透明的) cover and surrounded with insulation (隔热材料) to keep out heat. The bottom of the generator is attached to an exposed aluminum plate. That plate is warmed by the local air. At night, the top plate can get a couple of degrees Celsius cooler than the bottom of the generator.
Researchers tested a 20-centimeter prototype one clear December night in Stanford University, California. The generator produced up to 25 milliwatts of power per square meter of the device. That was enough power to light a small light emitting diode, or a LED bulb. Further improvements might increase its production to at least 500 milliwatts per square meter. The system might need more insulation around the cool, top plate to do that.
“The device could also help power remote weather stations or other environmental devices,” says Aaswath Raman. He is a material scientist who works on the device at the University of California, Los Angeles. “This may be useful in polar regions where people can’t see sunlight for months,” Raman says. “If you have some low-power devices and you need to power them through three months of darkness, this might be a way. ”
32. What does the author mainly talk about the device in Paragraph 3?
A. Its application fields. B. Its important effects.
C. Its working principle. D. Its developing process.
33. How can researchers make the device produce more electricity?
A. By putting more insulation around the top plate. B. By covering the top plate with a transparent cap.
C. By attaching the bottom plate to a warm plate. D. By using it in extremely cold and clear nights.
34. What’s Raman’s attitude towards the new device?
A. Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Negative. D. Hopeful.
35. What could be a suitable title for the text?
A. Differences Between a Solar Panel and a New Device
B. A Device Using the Cold Night Sky to Produce Electricity
C. A Device Bringing New Hope for Those in the Cold Night
D. Temperature Difference between the Earth and Outer Space
