One of the founding fathers of the Internet has predicted the end of traditional television. Vint Cerf, who helped to build the Internet while working as a researcher in America, said that the television was approaching its “iPod moment”.

In the same way that people now download their favorite music onto their iPod, he said that viewers would soon be downloading most favorite programs onto their computers. “85% of all videos we watch are prerecorded, so you can set your system to download them all the time,” said Mr. Cerf, who is now the vice president of Google, the world's largest search engine. “You're still going to need live television for certain things—like news, sporting events and emergencies—but increasingly it is going to be almost like the iPod.”

Although television on demand has not yet become a mainstream activity in the UK, the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 have all spent vast sums of money on technology which enables viewers to watch their favorite shows on their computers.

But some critics, including some Internet service providers, have warned that the Internet will collapse with millions of people downloading programs at the same time. Over the next four years, it is thought that the number of videos watched over the Internet will be four times as big as that. Broadband companies claim that the service will cause “traffic jams”, which will cost millions of pounds to get it to normal.

But Mr. Cerf dismissed the warnings as “scare thoughts”, saying that critics had predicted 20 years ago that the Net would collapse when people all around the world started to use it all together. “In the past 30 years it's increased a million times... We're far from reaching the capacity,” he said, “It's an understandable worry when they see huge amounts of information being moved around online.”

1. What would happen to television according to Vint Cerf?

A. Television would come to an end.

B. Television would be replaced by the computer.

C. Viewers would prefer watching TV programs downloaded on their computers.

D. Most people would prefer the Internet to television.

2. “iPod moment” refers to the time when ____.

A. people can enjoy the live broadcast of television

B. people can download content to look at later

C. all programs are recorded with careful plan

D. the computer and television are closely combined

3. According to the last paragraph, Mr. Cerf held the idea that ____.

A. the Internet will collapse with many people downloading programs at the same time

B. the Net will collapse when people all around the world start to use it all together

C. the Internet service will break down with many videos watched over the Internet

D. people's downloading TV programs on their computers won't cause the collapse of the Internet

4. What is the best title for the passage?

A. The Mix of Television and Net         B. The Beginning of iPod

C. The End of Traditional Internet         D. The Combination of iPod

B

I went over my grandmother's house today and she didn't have time for me. You see, the lady's husband downstairs died and my grandmother wanted to make some cookies for her. My grandmother did not analyze how the lady treated her, or if the lady needed any cookies, or even if the lady would like the cookies. She didn't think how much the lady has done for her. She simply began baking.

My grandmother turned 94 last week and this I believe is her secret to life. My grandmother is generous and hard-working in a way that is rare for our time. She lives by a simple belief: if someone needs your help, you help. Never mind all the analyzing and thinking whether the person deserves or appreciates the help. My grandmother doesn't sit around thinking about who might be making use of her: she simply does what is needed.

At 94, she is busy in life. She is making a blanket for a new great grandchild, and worried that I don't have enough kitchen towels for my home. She is bringing soup to a sick neighbor, and teaching the new wife of her cousin (who is 88) how to cook Italian food.

My grandmother had every right to give up, but she didn't—and amazingly life did bring her good things, like a husband with twinkling blue eyes who was much ahead of his time and believed that men should do an equal amount of cooking and cleaning in the home, three beautiful children (my father and two aunts), 22 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. My grandmother is not afraid to give someone she barely knows a bowl of soup. She never keeps herself out of the world.

5. The reason why my grandmother made cookies for the lady downstairs is that ____.

A. she thought the lady was too busy

B. she would make them as thanks to her

C. she thought she should do something for the lady at the special time

D. they had had an agreement before

6. In the writer's opinion, ____.

A. my grandmother has a secret way of living

B. my grandmother does everything on careful consideration

C. few people are as generous as my grandmother now

D. my grandmother will get something in return

7. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A. My grandmother cares for her children even some strangers.

B. My grandfather does not treat women in an unfair way.

C. This is a family in which there are nearly 30 people now.

D. My grandmother never keeps everything for herself.

8. We may infer from the text that the writer ____.

A. thinks his grandmother is living a tired life

B. thinks his grandmother is doing what she should do

C. thinks his grandmother should not be so kind

D. is proud of his grandmother

C

Memory, they say, is a matter of practice and exercise. If you have the wish and really make a conscious effort, then you can quite easily improve your ability to remember things. But even if you are successful, there are times when your memory seems to play tricks on you.

Sometimes you remember things that really did not happen. One morning last week, for example, I got up and found that I had left the front door unlocked all night, yet I clearly remember locking it carefully the night before.

Memory “trick” work the other way as well. Once in a while you remember not doing something, and then find out that you did. One day last month, for example, I was sitting in a barber shop waiting for my turn to get a haircut, and suddenly I realized that I had got a haircut two days before at the barber shop across the street from my office.

We always seem to find something funny and amusing in incidents caused by people's forgetfulness or absent-mindedness. Stories about absent-minded professors have been told for years, and we never got tired of hearing new ones. Unfortunately, however, absent-mindedness is not always funny. There are times when “trick” of our memory can cause us great trouble.

9. If you want to have a good memory, you should ____.

A. force yourself to remember things

B. make a conscious effort of practice and exercise

C. never stop learning D. try hard to remember things

10. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. One night the writer forgot to lock the front door.

B. One night the writer forgot having locked the front door.

C. The writer remembered to lock the door.

D. The writer remembered unlocking the front door.

11. In the passage, the writer seems to tell you ____.

A. forgetting things is serious and dangerous

B. always forgetting things is understandable

C. forgetting things at times is natural

D. the way to protect yourself from memory “tricks”

12. What is the best title for this passage?

A. How to Get a Good Memory           B. “Tricks” of Memory

C. Forgetfulness is Dangerous             D. Get Rid of Absent-mindedness

D

We certainly know that our universe exists, but this knowledge alone has not satisfied human's long search for further understanding. Our curiosity has led us to question our place in this universe and even the place of the universe itself. Throughout time we have asked ourselves these questions: How did our universe begin? How old is our universe? How did matter come to exist? Obviously, these are not simple questions. Throughout our brief history on this planet much time and effort has been spent looking for some clue. Yet, after all this energy has been used up, much of what we know is still only speculation (推測).

However, we have come a long way from the beginnings of the study of cosmology and the origins of the universe. Through the understandings of modern science, we have been able to provide firm theories for some of the answers that we once called speculation. True to the nature of science, most of these answers have only led to more interesting and complex questions.

It will be impossible to deal with all of the questions about the creation of everything that we know as reality in this short passage, but an attempt will be made to deal with certain basic questions of our being. It will be important to keep in mind that all of this information is often being questioned and reevaluated (再評估) in order to understand the universe more clearly. For our purposes, through an examination of what is known about the Big Bang itself and the age of the universe, we believe that we can begin to answer several of these key questions.

13. What helps people answer some complex questions?

14. What is the best title for the passage?

15. What is the latest theory about the universe?
