VI. 閱读理解。(30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C或D)中,选出最佳选项或回答所提问题。

A

Are you the type of person who always says “yes”? I've come to learn that it is very important to learn to say “no”. It's okay. People are still going to like you. They may even respect you more because they know you are honest.

I'm not saying to say “no” to someone who really needs your help. I'm talking about turning down that meeting that you really do not want to attend or that birthday party that you don't want to be a guest at.

Think for a moment how you feel when you say “yes” to something that you really don't want to do. If you're like I once was, you can't sleep at night and you think about it too much. It weighs on your mind. You try to find ways out. Whatever you're saying to yourself, if you really wanted to go, you wouldn't have all of these thoughts.

So, why not just say “no” from the beginning? Maybe you feel like if you don't show up at the meeting (by the way, it is not one you must attend), your boss isn't going to like you or your co-workers won't respect you. Maybe you feel as if your mom, dad or sisters won't love you as much if you don't do everything for them what they ask every occasion.

If these people are your true friends, family members, or a good boss, they will like or love you the same no matter what. People treat you the way you teach them to, and if you're someone who always says “yes”, then that's what they're expecting.

You need to do what is right for you. Of course we do have real obligations in life to fulfill, but we do not have to do everything others want us to do.

1. Which of the following statements would the writer agree with?

A. We should try to do what our friends ask us to do.

B. We should help others in need.

C. Always saying “yes” means you are dishonest.

D. Always saying “no” means you are brave.

2. Generally speaking, we agree to do what we hate to do because we have ____.

A. a bad habit B. a kind heart C. much concern D. obligations

3. The writer believes that if you say “no” to your family members, you'll ____.

A. have the same relationship with them as before

B. have a loose relationship with them

C. disappoint them                           D. upset them

4. What would be the best title for the text?

A. Learn to Make a Right Choice           B. To Be Yourself

C. Do What You Want to Do             D. Learn to Say “No”

B

In the 1950s, a family who owned a farm near Beulah, Michigan kept a bull chained to an elm (榆樹). The bull paced around the tree, dragging the heavy iron chain, which led to a groove (槽) in the bark. The groove deepened over the years, though for whatever reason, it did not kill the tree.

After some years, the family took their bull away. They cut the chain, leaving the loop (圈) around the tree and one link hanging down.

Then one year, agricultural disaster struck Michigan in the form of Dutch Elm Disease. All of the elms lining the road leading to the farm became infected and died. Everyone thought that the old elm would be next.

The farm's owners considered doing the safe thing: pulling it out and cutting it up into firewood before it died. But they simply could not bring themselves to do it. It was as if the old tree had become a family friend. So they decided to let nature take its course.

Amazingly, the tree did not die. Nobody could understand why it was the only elm that was still standing in the country!

Plant pathologists (病理学家) from Michigan State University came out to observe the tree. They observed the scar left by the iron chain, now almost completely covered by bark. The plant experts decided that it was the chain that saved the elm's life. They reasoned that the tree must have absorbed so much iron from the chain that it became immune (免疫) to the fungus (真菌).

It's said that what doesn't kill you will make you stronger. Or, as Ernest Hemingway put it,  “Life breaks us all, but afterwards, many of us are strongest at the broken places.”

5. What happened to the elms in Michigan during the agricultural disaster?

A. The elms were tied by iron chains.

B. Some of the elms were cut up into firewood.

C. All the elms were infected by a disease and died.

D. Nearly all of the elms died of a disease.

6. From the passage we can learn that the old elm was saved by ____.

A. the groove in the bark             B. the fungus in the tree

C. the iron remaining in it               D. its own immune system

7. The underlined sentence “let nature take its course” means ____.

A. leave the elm at the mercy of nature     B. help the elm grow normally

C. let nature take the elm away           D. have nature give a lesson to the elm

8. What is the best title for the text?

A. Never Lose Heart in Trouble           B. Strike While the Iron is Hot

C. Brave to Face Failure                 D. Stronger After Suffering

C

Angry survivors demanded answers on Sunday after a terrible stampede (踩踏事件) at “Love Parade 2010”, a music festival in Germany, which killed 19 people and left hundreds hurt.

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her shock over Saturday's tragedy in the western city of Duisburg. “This was a very sad day,” Merkel said. “We must do everything we can to ensure that something like this never happens again.”

Witnesses said that people pushed into the narrow tunnel, the only entrance to the Love Parade festival, from both sides until it was dangerously overcrowded. The panic began as festival-goers began to lose consciousness as they were crushed against the walls and each other. The dead included eight foreigners, from Australia, Italy, the Netherlands, China, Bosnia and Spain. More than 340 people were injured.

After the panic, a lot of emergency vehicles, including helicopters, could be seen parked on the highway leading to the festival site, carrying away the injured people. The festival itself, however, went on. Police were afraid that ending the music altogether could cause further unrest among the crowd.

“The event was a real mess,” Patrick Guenter, a 22-year-old baker, said. “Although the festival was full, they kept letting people in,” he added. “It seems the organizers didn't plan the route. The road was very narrow, and no one knew what was going on.” said Taggart Bowen-Gaddy, 20, an American from Philadelphia.

Officials said 4,000 police officers and 1,000 security guards provided security for the event, which attracted up to 1.4 million people. The authorities had only given organizers permission for 250,000 people to attend.

“I warned one year ago that Duisburg was not a suitable place for the Love Parade. The city is too small and narrow for such events. It is a pity that...” German police union chief Rainer Wendt told the Bild daily.

The chief organizer, Rainer Schaller, said the popular event would never be held again, “out of respect for the victims and their families”.

First held in Berlin in 1989 just months before the fall of the Wall, the Love Parade is one of the biggest music festivals in Europe. It left Berlin from 2007 onwards after disagreements with the city authorities over security and has been held in several other German cities in recent years.

9. How did the German Chancellor Angela Merkel feel about the tragedy?

A. She was very disappointed.             B. She was angry and surprised.

C. She was very puzzled.                   D. She was touched.

10. According to Patrick Guenter and Taggart Bowen-Gaddy, ____.

A. the event was well-organized         B. the performance was wonderful

C. Duisburg was suitable for the Love Parade   D. the organization was very bad

11. What can we infer from the passage?

A. Rainer Wendt's warning went unnoticed.

B. Rainer Wendt was a chief organizer of Love Parade 2010.

C. Rainer Wendt is a music lover.

D. Duisburg is a famous holiday destination.

12. What can we learn from the passage?

A. The Love Parade has been canceled forever.

B. The Love Parade is a very popular sport event.

C. The festival was ended shortly after the panic.

D. The Love Parade has a history of over 30 years.

D

Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford, England, on January 8, 1942. At the age of 17, he entered University College, Oxford. He wanted to study mathematics, but took up the study of physics when math was unavailable. He received a Ph.D. in physics despite being diagnosed (诊断) with Ameliotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (肌萎缩性脊髓侧索硬化症) while at Oxford in 1963. In 1985 he became ill with pneumonia (肺炎), and since then has required 24-hour nursing. Dr. Hawking's determination, along with the help of his family and associates, has allowed him to continue to work. In 1970 he began studying black holes. His research led him to predict that black holes send out radiation in the X-ray to gamma-ray (伽馬射线) range of the spectrum (光谱). In the 1980s he returned to an earlier interest, the origins of the universe. He has co-authored many publications, such as 300 Years of Gravity and The Large Scale Structure of Space Time. Dr. Hawking has also written books such as A Brief History of Time, Black Holes and Baby Universes and other Essays, The Universe in a Nutshell and others. He continues to give lectures, despite having been unable to speak since 1985, with the aid of a speech synthesizer (合成器) and a portable computer. He currently holds Isaac Newton's chair as the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University in England.

13. Why did Hawking go to University College, Oxford?
