Ole Luk-Oie was the Dream God who knew many stories. He loved giving stories to children while they slept. He did this with two umbrellas. One umbrella had lots of beautiful pictures, and it gave the good children lots of beautiful dreams. The other umbrella had no picture, and this was used for the naughty children. It gave them no dreams at all.
Ole Luk-Oie gave seven stories to a boy named Hjalmar for seven nights a week.
On Monday, Ole Luk-Oie made Hjalmar’s room look like a greenhouse with lots of plants and colourful flowers. He also trained the letters in Hjalmar’s exercise book to stand neatly.
The next morning, Hjalmar rewrote the letters in his exercise book carefully.
On Tuesday, Ole Luk-Oie made a picture on Hjalmar’s wall come to life! It was a boat sailing on the ocean, and Hjalmar sailed it all night!
On Wednesday, it was raining outside. Ole Luk-Oie and Hjalmar sailed all around the town in their boat. They met a flock of ducks and saved some chickens.
On Thursday, they went to a mouse’s wedding! Hjalmar dressed up as a tin soldier. They danced with beautiful lady mice and ate lots of peas.
On Friday, they went to another wedding. This was the wedding of the dolls of Hjalmar’s sister. All the furniture came along! They sang merry tunes and were all so happy.
On Saturday, Ole Luk-Oie opened his umbrella with pictures over Hjalmar. The umbrella looked like a beautiful China bowl, and Hjalmar saw willow trees and an arch bridge on it.
Ole Luk-Oie also said that they had to make all the world clean, as the next day would be Sunday, which is a holiday! So they took down stars from the sky and cleaned them.
On Sunday, Ole Luk-Oie told Hjalmar about his brother—the Death God. He only came to everyone once, and he told you the most beautiful story, or one of great terror, depending on how you lived.
Ole Luk-Oie said to Hjalmar, “If you are good, you will have a beautiful story. If you are bad, there will be a lot to fear.” Then Ole Luk-Oie went away. Before he left, he told Hjalmar that he would always lead a good life.
