Looking at these professional wildlife images, it's easy to assume the person behind the camera is an adult with decades of experience. But these photos were taken by 14-year-old Josiah Launstein.He's just been awarded 2019 Young Close-Up Photographer of the Year by CUPOTY01.

He's received numerous 1.________and his work has been shown in museums and galleries worldwide, including the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. Josiah started photography at six, following in his big sister's and dad's footsteps. He used his dad's backup camera to practice and learn thecraft. Josiah's focus is animals.

“I was born in a wildlife-loving family,” he says. “I've just always been drawn to 2.________.”His favorite animal to shoot is the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. Although they are 3.________(big/smart), they're not always easy to find. “I love where they live—up in the mountains and the high country,” he says. “Hiking up to them to find them is quite relaxing.”

He's photographed one group of bighorns so often that he is now able to recognize them individually. He takes notes of their habits, their distinctive personalities and battle scars. Male bighorns are known to meet and induce each other beforematingseason.

Josiah has even given some of them nicknames such as Poser, a ram that's earned his name because he always appears to be modelling for the camera. “To be a wildlife 4.________, you need a lot of patience and determination,” says Josiah, “because you are at the mercy of nature.” He endures rain, sleet, snow and freezing temperatures. To frame the perfect shot, there's a lot of waiting and long days.

Sometimes it can take weeks to get lucky. Josiah makes sure to respect his animal subjects by working from a distance. He uses a big cameralenstozoom inand capture closeup shots without harming the safety of the animal or himself. He doesn't do anything to grab the animals' attention.

Each of Josiah's pictures tells a story, which he includes with his work. He wants people to care about the animals they see in his 5.________.He gives advice to teens who love photography:“Always take your camera and your gear with you no matter where you're going because you just never know where the animals are going to be.”
