It was already late when we started for the next town, which, according to the map, was about fifteen miles away on the other side of the hill. There we felt sure that we would find a bed for the night. Darkness fell soon after we left the village, but luckily we met no one as we drove fast along the narrow road that led to the hill. As we climbed higher, it became colder and rain began to fall, making it difficult at times to see the road. I asked John to drive more slowly. After we had travelled for about twenty miles, there was still no sign of the town which was marked on the map, we were beginning to get worried. Then, without warning, the car stopped. A quick examination showed that we had run out of petrol (汽油). Although we had little food with us, only a few biscuits and some chocolate, we decided to spend the night in the car.

Our meal was soon over, and then I tried to go to sleep at once, but John, who was a poor sleeper, got out of the car after a few minutes and went for a walkup the hill. Soon he came running back. From the top of the hill he had seen, in the valley below, the lights of the town we were looking for. We at once pushed the car to the top of the hill and set off down the hill. In less than a quarter of an hour we were in the town, where we found a hotel quite easily.

It may seem like a moment in a science fiction movie. In a fierce battle, a creature loses an arm but, then, grows another one to take its place.

However, this is not science fiction. It is scientific fact. Some fish and amphibians, such as salamanders, can regrow lost limbs and organs.

As mammals (哺乳动物) evolved they lost the ability to regrow, or regenerate, parts of their body. However, experiments show that it may be possible to regain that ability.

Tropical freshwater zebrafish are popular pets. They are also popular as lab animals. Their embryos (胚胎) are clear, or translucent. They can regrow damaged fins, skin and hearts. Zebrafish are also genetically similar to humans.

In 2013, the website Sci-News reported that researchers had found that 70 per cent of “protein-coding human genes” are related to genes found in the zebrafish. The report also said that researchers at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Britain also found that 84 per cent of genes known to be connected to human diseases have a zebrafish counterpart.

Scientist Wang Yadong is one of the Pittsburg researchers. He and his team are studying the ability of zebrafish to regenerate limbs and organs. Wang says you can cut away about 20 per cent of the zebrafish heart and it will regenerate. He adds that the same process may be able to help humans.

Scientists injected an “extracellular matrix”, or ECM, from the heart of a zebrafish into a severely damaged mouse heart. They found that the heart muscle regrew in days. They found something else. The healing (痊愈) was even faster when the ECM was taken from zebrafish that was itself in the process of regrowing damaged tissue.

28. What is the main reason that the zebrafish were chosen as lab animals?

A. Theyre mammals.

B. Theyre popular pets.

C. Theyre genetically similar to humans.

D. Theyre easy to find for the researchers.

29. What does the underlined word “counterpart” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

A. A similar thing. B. A different fish.

C. A human being. D. A little mouse.

30. What is the result of injecting ECM from a zebrafish into the damaged mouse heart?

A. The zebrafish died quickly.

B. The mouse heart regrew in days.

C. The zebrafish heart regrew quickly.

D. The mouse healed more slowly than normal.

31. Where is the text most probably taken from?

A. A science fiction. B. A guide book.

C. A fashion magazine. D. A science report.

Koalas remind people of teddy bears. They have thick fur and large ears. Their broad, flat nose makes them look cute, similar to teddy bears. In fact koalas arent cute. They have sharp (鋒利的) teeth and very sharp claws! Koalas are marsupials. This means the mother carries her baby in a pocket while it develops, similar to a kangaroo. The baby koala lives in its mothers pocket for the first six months of its life.

The name “koala” comes from a native Australian word that means “no drink”. The koalas get almost all their water from the eucalyptus (桉树) leaves they eat. Thats where they get their food too. Koalas eat only eucalyptus leaves, and only the leaves of certain eucalyptus trees. The eucalyptus trees are where the koalas live. Its also where they sleep. Koalas sleep about nineteen hours a day!

Why do they sleep so much? Some people think its because theyre lazy. But koalas arent lazy. They sleep so much because there isnt much nutrition in eucalyptus leaves. Koalas store hardly any fat, so they must save their energy. One way to do this is to move slowly and sleep a lot.

After a day of sleeping they like to move around and eat just after sunset. They live alone most of the time. Koalas are very protective of their trees. If a koala sees another koala eating in its favorite tree, it might tell the other koala to leave by “barking” at it. Koalas do “talk” to each other. Besides barks, the males make a deep grunting sound. The mothers and babies talk in soft clicking sounds. If they get frightened they may scream (尖叫) like a baby.

32. According to the text, both koalas and kangaroos ___ .

A. have thick fur

B. have sharp teeth

C. eat eucalyptus leaves

D. carry their young in a pocket

33. The word “koala” comes from a word that means “___”.

A. no drink B. moving slowly

C. large ears D. barking loudly

34. Why do koalas sleep a lot?

A. Their babies need to get much rest.

B. They get tired from playing so much.

C. Their food does not give them much energy.

D. They do not like to be awake when it is warm.

35. If an adult koala screams like a baby, he may be ___ .

A. worried B. scared C. hungry D. sleepy

The Seven Cs of a Good Letter

What is the secret of writing a good letter? Here are two main ones. Dont try to be fancy. Dont try to impress your reader. You will be successful if you follow these seven Cs.

Clear. Use short, direct sentences.        36        Talk as if the reader were right there with you. Above all, dont use an introduction.

Correct.        37        Dont guess, even for spelling. Refer to your dictionary. If you need to, check a reference book too. Use them as much as you need to.

Complete. Dont scatter points.        38        This is good organization too.

Courteous. Be friendly rather than overly casual. Present your information nicely even if you are complaining about something. In all letters, treat others as you want them to treat you.

Concise. Make each point as clearly and briefly as you can.

Conversational. This is really the secret of good writing.

39        Such a letter has a natural, friendly tone. Let your personality come through naturally.

Considerate.        40        Write about what you believe the reader needs or wants to know. Try to be helpful. This will build good feeling toward you.

The seven Cs are about writing letters. But how about school papers? Use the seven Cs. Write as if you are talking to your teacher or professor. Youll be surprised. Youll almost instantly become a good writer. And you might even enjoy writing from now on.
