Agricultural scientist Yuan Longping, known as the father of hybrid rice, was awarded the Medal of the Republic on September 29, along with seven other prominent fi gures for their outstanding contributions to the construction and development of the Peoples Republic of China.
Born in Qianyang, central Chinas Hunan Province, in 1930, Yuan graduated from Southwest Agriculture College in 1953 and devoted himself to agricultural education and research.

During a seminar at the Chinese Academy of Engineering on September 29, Yuan said he still had two major missions to accomplish: He hopes to push the hybrid rice yield to 18 metric tons per hectare and transform at least 6.7 million hectares of saline wasteland into breadbasket.

On the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Peoples Republic of China (PRC), President Xi Jinping said that “over the past seven decades, Chinese people of all ethnic groups have made great achievements that have amazed the world through concerted efforts and arduous struggle.”
The Chinese people have known since ancient times that a good life comes from arduous work. For thousands of years, with their unremitting efforts, they have developed their country into a power boasting an excellent culture and traditions. The nation has produced considerable wealth and overcome various di- sasters through hard work and wisdom. Without the hard work, todays Chinese civilization would not exist.
The past seven decades especially record the struggle. In the early years of the PRC, it lacked the ability to manufacture aircraft, tanks and even tractors and cars but did not give up. Instead through hard work, China was able to set up an independent and relatively complete industrial system and national economic system. Since then the Chinese nation has been able to design manned spacecraft, deep-sea submersibles, lunar exploration robots and highspeed railways.
It is because of the spirit of hard work and struggle in the face of diffi culties that China has achieved so much within a span of 70 years, transitioning from keeping up with the times to taking a lead in the new era, and from standing up to becoming rich and growing strong.
In the coming years, the Chinese will carry on with their industrious spirit to realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Shenzhen, the special economic zone(SEZ) in south Chinas Guangdong Province, has a new title: pioneering demonstration zone. The title signals a change in the citys historical mission, portending a new era of Chinas reform and opening up.
In the early years of reform and opening up, Shenzhens work was to transition from a planned economy to a market economy. Today, it is exploring a new pattern of opening up.
Over the past four decades, China has designated SEZs with special and favorable policies to attract capital, promoting local economic growth. The SEZs were set up in places where the planned economy was the weakest and the market economy was practiced ahead of other parts of the country. Today, Shenzhen boasts a welldeveloped market economy and will now construct a demonstration zone of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
The demonstration zone signifies a change in the concept of governance, discarding the emphasis on GDP and economic growth. Peoples feeling of happiness, security and achievements are to be important measurements of successful governance.
High-quality development depends on industrial restructuring and upgrading and innovation. Only by doing well in these aspects can Shenzhen help to strengthen Chinas international competitiveness and redefine Chinas role in the international labor division.
However, public health and hygiene, education and public welfare should also be covered by the concept of high-quality development. All these issues are waiting to be solved through a trial in the demonstration zone.

The Second China International Import Expo (CIIE) will kick off in Shanghai on November 5. More than 3,000 exhibitors from more than 150 countries and regions will be taking part. The expo also expects to see more new products and technologies.
As the worlds fi rst national-level expo focusing on imports, the CIIE provides great opportunities for all involved. While Chinese consumers can have their newer and higher demands met, exhibitors can access Chinas huge consumption market from this launch pad, while global free trade is injected with new energy.
Today, premium brands of imported milk and toys are available in remote hinterlands. Satisfying Chinese peoples upgraded consumption demands is an important benefi t of the CIIE.
Currently, global free trade has taken a big hit from rising trade protectionism. Against this backdrop, the CIIE is not only sending a strong signal to the rest of the world that only win-win cooperation is the way forward, but is also displaying Chinas tangible efforts to improve world trade and boost the world economy.
