Reporter: Well, could that be a thing of the past in our schools? A school in Salford has replaced its bell with music to mark the beginning and end of lessons. Five Lives Rowan Bridge has been to St. Ambrose-Barlow Roman Catholic School to find out more. Tell us Rowan.

Rowan: Yes, so they do have a bell, but it was described to me as being more appropriate for a prison than a school, so they decided to do away with it, and they only use it for fire alarms. So now, youre more likely to hear the theme tune from out of the film Out of Africa or a Beatles track being played between lessons. Well, if theyre feeling really adventurous, the last day of term they played “Schools Out” by Alice Cooper, just to be a bit out-there. So they play, sort of, 30 seconds of an instrumental version of a track to mark the end of lessons. It was the idea of the Head, Marie Garside, who explained to me why she brought it in.

Marie Garside: One, to develop peoples listening skills, to allow them to have, hear a wider range of music within school than they perhaps normally access via their favorite application or radio station. Two, actually create a calm atmosphere around the school.

Rowan: So probably this is about introducing them to music they wouldnt otherwise hear.

Marie: Yeah.

Rowan: Have you done a 70s Prog Rock Day yet?

Marie: No, weve had ABBA on the Abb…ABBA Days.

Rowan: OK, so what are we listening to now?

Marie: Were listening to “Out of Africa.”

Rowan: Its lunch time, and hundreds of people smartly dressed in their black school blazers are besieging the canteen in a rather orderly fashion. For them and, indeed, many of the members of staff, the musics a welcome change from the old traditions of the school bell.

Scott: Hello. Im Scott and Im from St. Ambrose-Barlow High School.

Hannah: Hello. Im Hannah, Im a pupil from St. AmbroseBarlow.

Rowan: So what did you think when they said “were gonna replace the bell with music”?

Scott: I was a bit surprised, because Ive never heard it before, but, like, its better than a boring bell.

Hannah: To begin with, I think that itd really work, cause, like, a bells a bit more alarming. Its quite nicecause its a good flow, really, like when youre walking out of class, its nice to have some theme music to walk around to.

Rowan: And what do you think of the musical choices?

Hannah: I think theyre really good, and they are like, like a disco den. The uploads are really good ones, especially like girl ones like “We are Family,” things like that, so when you walk with your friends, like, youll sing coming on.

Rowan: You make it sound like an episode of Glee.

Hannah: It isnt really, but sometimes it is probably. Its not too as lively as going in cause you know we have to be sensible in school, and not mess around too much.

Mrs. Sanders: Hi, Im Mrs. Sanders. Im a teacher of ballet at St. Ambrose-Barlow.

Rowan: As a teacher you clearly dont have a first name.

Miss Ward: Im Miss Ward. And Im an art teacher at St. Ambrose-Barlow. I think its great. I think the kids really enjoy it.

Mrs. Sanders: It makes for a lot calmer environment rather than just a big loud bell at the end of the lesson. Its more of a nice transition. Someones got a particular request. Though most of them have been adhered to, some of them, “Gangnam Style,”didnt go down too well, so thats why…thats why their choices come from sensible music.

Miss Ward: And sensible choices.

Rowan: Wheres One Direction?

Miss Ward: That probably wouldnt be my personal choice, but…

Rowan: Theyre modern classic.

Miss Ward: …but wouldnt…wouldnt be my choice.

Mrs. Sanders: Maybe we do need to get some One Direction. Maybe we should start a One Direction Day.

Rowan: One Direction Day.

Reporter: Rowan Bridge is doing his best to promote 70s prog rock at some temporary school in Salford.
