This is the time of year

when almost every night

the frail, illegal fi re balloons appear.

Climbing the mountain height,

rising toward a saint

still honored in these parts,

the paper chambers fl ush and fi ll with light

that comes and goes, like hearts.

Once up against the sky it's hard

to tell them from the stars—

planets, that is—the tinted4ones:

Venus going down, or Mars,

or the pale green one. With a wind,

they fl are and falter, wobble and toss;5

but if it's still they steer between

the kite sticks of the Southern Cross6,

可与此地圣人比肩;

摇摆中身姿踉跄;

3. Elizabeth Bishop:

4. tinted:

6. Southern Cross:

receding, dwindling,7solemnly

and steadily forsaking us,

or, in the downdraft8from a peak,

suddenly turning dangerous.

Last night another big one fell.

It splattered9like an egg of fi re

against the cliあ behind the house.

The fl ame ran down. We saw the pair

of owls who nest there fl ying up

and up, their whirling black-and-white

stained bright pink underneath, until

they shrieked up out of sight.

The ancient owls' nest must have burned.

Hastily, all alone,

a glistening10armadillo left the scene,

rose-f l ecked11, head down, tail down,

and then a baby rabbit jumped out,

short-eared, to our surprise.

So soft!—a handful of intangible12ash

with fi xed, ignited13eyes.

Too pretty, dreamlike mimicry!

O falling fi re and piercing cry

and panic, and a weak mailed14fi st

clenched ignorant against the sky!

把观者抛在脑后;

9. splatter:

10. glisten:

12. intangible:

13. ignite:
