Bao,Pixar's short film about an adorable Chinese dumpling that comes to life,just won the 2019 Oscar for best animated short film.The movie is the first Pixar short film directed by a woman,Domee Shi.At the awards ceremony,she said, “I think one of the great things about being able to make Bao is I got to do a lot more research and dive into my heritage.I took it for granted that my mom making dumplings when I was growing up.”
The story is simple and sweet:an aging and lonely Chinese mother,suffering from empty nestsyndrome,receives an unexpected second chance at motherhood when her homemade dumpling comes to life.Mom excitedly welcomes this newbundleof joy into her life.But Dumpling starts growing up fast and she must come to the bittersweetrevelationthat nothing stays cute and small forever.“It explores the ups and downs of the parent-child relationship through the colorful,rich and tastylensof the Chinese immigrant community in Canada,”Pixar said in an official statement.
An American magazine commented that as ametaphorfor motherhood,it's a brilliant example of what Pixar does best.A twist that literally caused audiences to be in surprise with well-earned emotional truths.So for fans getting a first glimpse of thetraileron Instagram,theoverwhelmingexpression was one of joy,not least because this was made by an Asian woman,the first to direct for Pixar.“I am very excited for this short because it's coming from Pixar's first female Asian director.I can tell that it will be very emotional.Can't wait,”said fan Abby Berlage.
