Shennong's Herbal Classic,also called Bencaojing or Benjing,is one of China’s four classic medicine works.Being the earliest work on Chinese medicine,it was said to be written by Shennong,passed down orally through the generations,and finally compiled into a book in the Eastern Han Dynasty.The book contains medical practices and achievements summarized by a great many medical scientists in the Qin and Han Dynasties.

《神农本草经》,又称《本草经》或《本经》,中医四大经典著作之一。作为现存最早的中药学著作,约起源于神农氏,代代口耳相传,于东汉时期集结整理成书,是秦汉时期众多医学家搜集、总结、整理当时医药学经验成果而形成的专著,是对中国中医药的第一次系统总结。书中规定的大部分中药学理论和配伍规则以及提出的“七情和合”原则,在中国几千年中医用药实践中发挥了巨大作用,是中医药物学理论发展的源头。在李时珍《本草纲目》出版之前,该书一直被视为最权威的医书。
《神农本草经》全书分三卷,载药365种,以三品分类法,分上、中、下三品,文字简练古朴,成为中药理论精髓。书中每味药都按药名、异名、性味、主治病证、生长环境等分别阐述,大多数为临床常用药物,朴实有验。据当地村医杨申相介绍,书中所著的许多单行药,至今仍在民间广为习用。
