The cover article The New American Way of War in Time on Dec 11th 2017 mentions that the reliance on Special Operations was born of necessity. The Sept. 11, 2001, attacks showed that tanks, aircraft carriers and the deployment of tens of thousands of conventional forces could no longer protect the U.S. as they had during the Cold War. Special Operations forces now make up nearly all U.S. combat casualties, despite making up less than 5% of the total force.
The article with the title saying There’s a Third-World America that No One Notices in Washingtonpost on Dec 2nd,2017, mentioned that in the “colonias”of the American Southwest, hundreds of thousands of U.S. citizens have lived without running water for decades. The flooding and generally poor sanitary conditions lead to flourishing diseases . Colonias have high rates of diseases rarely found in developed countries, such as tuberculosis, typhoid and dysentery. Lawmakers only kick into gear when news of cholera spreads and newspaper headlines describe colonias as “third world.” Then they pull back slowly as pressure dies down. That’s typical of government responses to colonias.
