On 27 Apr 2018, Korean MFDS released a guideline detailing the testing method for cosmetic microbial limit to ensure the quality and safety of domestic cosmetics and help manufacturers meet quality control requirements.
The guideline is divided into three parts. The first part is an overview of the main contents. The second part provides the composition of test method. The third part details the microbial limit test procedures,including sample pretreatment, principles for preparation of test fluids, etc. The key contents of the guideline are as follows:
• Define the terms used in cosmetic microbial testing;
• Explain the purpose of the testing and preventive measures;
• Provide examples of test methods;
• Develop microbial limit testing methods for cosmetic ingredients.
Cosmetics use various ingredients, but sometimes these ingredients can become nutrients for microorganisms. Cosmetics that are contaminated with microorganisms can cause adverse reactions to the human body. Therefore, it is crucial to establish the cosmetic microbial limits. Manufacturers who do not comply with the cosmetic microbial limits will be subject to rectifications and possible publication of testing results which could further impact reputation and influence consumer purchasing.
