the New Year has seen a rich flow of eco- nomic cooperation among Chinese and African enterprises, with China Harbor Engineering Co. among those leading the way. On January 13, the Chinese company officially began construction of a submarine pipeline installation for Dangote Oil Refining Co. Ltd. in Lagos, Nigerias economic hub. The pipeline project is part of Dangotes $17 billion gas pipeline, fertilizer, petrochemicals and refinery projects.

“The desire to have the best installations informed the decision to work with a reputable, world-class firm like China Harbor,” said Sumil Katawia of the Dangote Group.

This is not the only good news for China Harbor in the New Year. It was also included in the Top 100 Recommended Chinese Enterprises in Africa for its contribution to Africas economic and social development, which was announced on January 18 in Beijing by China Africa Industrial Forum (CAIF), an organization facilitating China-Africa exchanges and cooperation in diverse fields, and BEIJING REVIEW, a China-based publisher producing ChinAfrica magazine – a leading Sino-African affairs publication.

“With the list, we hope to recommend strong Chinese enterprises with a good reputation to African countries, which African governments and enterprises can use as a reference in their cooperation with Chinese enterprises,” said Cheng Zhigang, Secretary General of CAIF. According to Cheng, the 100 enterprises were not selected only by size, investment volume or economic strength. More emphasis was put on whether these companies produce products and provide services that are in demand by local people. “For example, this year, we have a company producing rickshaws. In China, it may be a small company, but rickshaws are useful in many African countries as they can be used in areas such as tourism,” said Cheng. The list of Top 100 Recommended Chinese Enterprises in Africa has been released every year since 2011. “Compared with the previous years, we have more enterprises in areas such as auto making, Internet technology and agricultural product processing this year,”said Cheng, adding that this also indicates the changes of Chinese investments in recent years. The Top 100 Recommended Chinese Enterprises in Africa 2017 were selected from 120 companies. The selectors comprised former Chinese ambassadors to African countries, experts and scholars, media and online voters.
