Historical perspective of the society:The society was founded to support the development of sleep research and to facilitate the collaboration of different medical specialists in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders (otolaryngologists,odontologists,neurologists,psychiatrists).
Important sleep physicians / researchers in the history of the NSS:Professor of neurology,DSc Vanda Liesiene developed basic sleep research models in animals and humans related to sleep and vegetative regulation.In clinical research,associations between sleep macrostructure,insomnia and emotional disorders were established.

Accreditation / Certification procedure:The sleep medicine centre in Sapiega Hospital,Vilnius was accredited in the year 2009.Accreditation was made by the national sleep medicine society according to ESRS guidelines.
Educational programs:Edited book “Sleep Medicine”,regular lectures for family doctors,sleep training annual courses for neurologists,educational articles in local journals “Seminars of Neurology”,“Art of treatment”,booklets for patients.
Present activities,working groups,task forces:Working groups formed in every centre,development sleep apnea treatment,sleep and odontology,conference organization.
Miscellaneous:“Sleep day”,“Narcolepsy day” organization,advertisement for population,TV emissions on sleep disorders problems,popular educational articles about sleep problems in the local press.
