REUURNiNG OF FOREIGNEDUCATED CHINESE Oriental Outlook November 16

today, china is witnessing an unprecedented returning of graduates and talents who have studied or worked abroad. in 2016 alone, a total of 432,500 foreign-educated chinese returned from abroad, an increase of 58.48 percent from 2012.

The growing figure is an outcome of chinas rise in the world. As china achieves the rapid progress in economy and society, especially in the field of science and technology, the country is like a magnet that strongly attracts chinese graduates, researchers and scientists abroad.

Among all returnees, there is a remarkable growth of scientists who have made outstanding achievements abroad. they came back because they are able to participate in more and more significant scientific research projects in china, ranging from aerospace, quantum physics, supercomputing to new materials and life science. they are more likely to make scientific breakthroughs here than by working abroad.

MORE PASSION FOR CHINESE NEEDED Workers Daily November 6

it is reported that there are more than 100 million people living outside china who are learning chinese. in more than 60 countries, chinese teaching has been incorporated into their national education systems, with more than 170 countries opening chinese courses or setting up chinese programs in schools. in many overseas regions, the number of chinese learners is exploding.

For example, chinese courses are now available in primary and secondary schools in washington, d.c. and every u.s. state except south dakota, ranking the fourth most widely taught foreign language in the countrys education system, according to a survey released in June.

in contrast to foreigners desire for the chinese language, however, a lot of people in china, including students, attach more importance to english than chinese studies. As a result, even a big fraction of college students in the chinese department are not good at their major. But many of the students poor in chinese manage high scores in english tests and can speak fluent English.

Few people in china worry about not having a good grasp of Chinese, while English language proficiency certificates are highly valued. With the rise of Chinas status and influence in the world, Chinese people should first love and learn their mother tongue, so that this beautiful language can gain greater popularity around the world.

LAND RECLAMATION SPREE Caixin Weekly October 30

on August 22, the state council dispatched inspection teams to investigate excessive land reclamation at sea in coastal provinces such as liaoning, hebei, Jiangsu and Fujian and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. however, reclamation projects along the countrys coastline are unlikely to be curbed as a result of this move.

in addition to a strict land use quota, arable land development usually involves huge compensation and other complicated issues. comparatively, reclaiming land from the sea costs much less and incurs fewer problems. such manmade lands bring huge profits to developers as they are usually located in densely-populated regions or on the seaside and have developed transportation networks. even land prices of their neighboring areas will inflate. High economic returns thus lead to more and more land reclamation projects.

But their damage to the coastal ecosystem should not be underestimated. More worrying is that the absence of explicit laws to regulate land reclamation has made it easy for developers to escape supervision and punishment, which in turn expose the sea to more damage.

LIQUOR CONUNDRUM China Economic Weekly November 13

since china launched its severe anti-graft campaign at the end of 2012, spirits producers have experienced a drop in business due to shrinking purchases from government departments. however, the high-end Moutai brand, distilled chinese liquor, has seen its sales outperform its rivals in the past three months since August. the liquor is in high demand but short supply. its share price jumped to 500 yuan and then 600 yuan in August and October, becoming the first stock in the A-share market with such a high price.

China Economic Weekly says the case mirrors acceleration of consumers trading up. Against the backdrop of a growing economy, chinese are getting richer and able to purchase high-end products. According to this trend, consumption has become the major driver of chinas economic growth for three consecutive years. Meantime, Moutai should be aware that if a shortage of the liquor continues, it may be hoarded by speculators for profits, resulting in a disturbed market having a negative effect on both the consumer and the producer.
