International Experts Explore Celadon in Zhejiang

A delegation of more than 50 ceramics experts and scholars representing Peking University, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Palace Museum, China National Museum, Capital Museum, Shanghai Museum and various other organizations in South Korea and Japan gathered in Shangyu to brainstorm about new development possibilities of the art of ceramics in the ‘Belt & Road context, at the 2017 China (Shangyu) Yue Celadon International Seminar on September 24-26, 2017.
The delegation surveyed the kiln remains at the Fenghuangshan Archaeological Park, the International ‘Artist-in-Residence program at the Celadon Culture Town, and the Shangyu Museum. The kiln site at Fenghuangshan was rated among the ‘top 10 archaeological findings in China in 2014, and is highly regarded by insiders for its unusually large number of kilns and high quality celadon products preserved from ancient times. Statistics show Shangyu hosts about 400 ancient kilns spanning a period from the East Han Dynasty (25-220AD) all the way down to the Northern Song (960-1127). In as early as the middle and late period of the East Han Dynasty, artisans working in the Caoe River area were already producing high quality porcelain artifacts. It is a consensus reached by the international archaeologist circle that Shangyu is the ‘root of porcelain production in its mature state. Aware of the long term future benefits of the porcelain tradition of Shangyu, the local government has taken extensive actions to revitalize the glory of the ‘birthplace of celadon.
